Post

Seeking help on model

Hi peeps I am hoping someone can help! I have been searching for more information on my MK 1 convertible. She has a BBS bodykit factory fitted and etched into the rear glass (which is original) is the WOLFSBERG edition logo and also the door locks are WOLFSBERG edition ones too. Now my research tells me the MK1 WOLFSBERG edition is something of an enigma so she could be extremely rare!! I am having to sell to raise funds for my daughter so could really do with firming up the info!

Many thanks for reading!

Not sure there was actually a Wolfsburg Edition. I thought it was just an after- marketing thing, apart from possibly Mk2 Rallyes. The door pins you can get off ebay as you can, I think, a transfer that looks like etched glass. Double check it isn't one of those.
Weren't all early Mk1s built in Wolfsburg, so no special edition?

Hi Russt the glass is definitely etched and not a transfer. I have struggled to find info especially with her bodykit type too she's quite different to the standard models at the time so hoping you pro's here will educate me! 😊💗

Every Golf Cabrio built were made by Karmann, in Osnabrück, Germany.

If yours is 84/85, then I was selling them at the time and I do not recall a Wolfsberg Edition!

So I see two possible scenarios here.

1. The selling dealer was sniffing glue at the time and went bonkers and put all you have listed on the car.
The reason I doubt the dealer did it is because of the rear window. I did see dealers do the odd body kit like Dover Court in London for example.

2. All was done post first day of registration by one or more owners.

Lastly and now really sticking my neck out here.
Looking at the logo in the rear window, if it's real who put it there?

If that was a factory job I'd expect to see it a lot smaller than that, the size no bigger than £2 coin and on every piece of glass. What you have is large, load and in ya face and I don't see a company like VW even back then doing it so big.

But I could be so wide of the mark as it could have been available in another Country and imported etc…

So I'm just going to sit back and wait till I get shot down in flames and I'm forced to eat my Cabby!

I was speaking to an old guy at a show who used to sell early golfs back in the day for Smithfields in Birmingham. He said they had a brand new, Inari Silver series 1 GTI which a customer ordered with the BBS bodykit but it was the UK dealer that had to paint the body kit and fit it. He also said they sold a series 2 gti for a customer in a non standard red (ie not Mars) but that was ordered straight from the factory so there certainly will be anomalies out there.
I'm going with golf Cabrio on this one. The body kit may have been on it from new but doubt its a limited edition - just a fitted option.
Unless you can find some hard evidence about what you think it maybe then it won't make a huge difference to the price. The condition and mileage will be what matters.

I can't remember one either and have seen things like the door pins on other later cars as well along with filler caps, window winders etc, so I think they are aftermarket accessories.

I am officially stupid the think on the window is a transfer I climbed in the back to check it out!! I seriously couldn't tell from the outside it totally looks like it's etched. What a silly thing to put on the window if it means nothing 😡 Thanks for the advice. So I should assume the bodykit is just a factory option? She's so pretty I don't want to part with her at all. She's just flew threw the MOT too I am proud! Xx

Hey mate we all make mistakes, as the Darlek said climbing off the dustbin!  ;)

Again I personally don't believe the body kit came on that car out of the factory.
It's hard to tell from the photos but the body kit looks like a pro job but I still don't even believe the dealer did it.  :ninja:
It's a 1 in a 1,000 chance because we were then and they still are about moving metal, no emotion, just money!

Yes we'd bung BBS wheels on, expensive Blaupunt unit, mudflaps etc… But that work takes an hour or two of time and not a day or two in the paint shop.

Anyhow you've got a bright, newly MOT'd Cabby and I'm sure you'll find a buyer at the right price.

There's some hieroglyphics done with what looks like a marker pen!  :ninja:

It is the registration number etched into the glass, car door is open and I think it's the red front wing you can see, or this is an anti theft warning sticker around the etching, got something similar on my car although it's black and red. - this feels a bit like one of your GAP competitions Mike.

Back on topic a bit, there are a few BBS kitted cars coming up on the forum at the moment, I think they look really good and very retro.

Etching was done at the dealer if requested or later on.

Actually we used to sell it for a lot of money, it was a good little earner.

But I'm still curious as to what and why there's something written on the red paint work at the top of the door?

I personally also like the bbs kit - its keeping it in time period and gives a great look to the mk1.

I had the bbs kit (since sold it) and was tempted to put it on my tintop as you rarely ever see a kitted one on this side. The drilling into the arches and sills put me off.  :(

Cheers Hugh.

Hi sorry I've been workin so absent for a couple of hours, yes it's the reg number etched into the glass it's on all the windows but I've taken the pic at an odd angle from the inside almost looking down so it looks like it's on the paint! Xx

Ps the info ref the bodykit came from the chap I bought it from - he was only the 2nd owner and the passed info on from when he bought it so it could be wrong. Xxxx

Yours looks good and it will sell at the right price.
But without any further evidence I think it's safe to say that the bodykit and the etching was done by a dealer. 👍

Window etching was still relatively new back then and we sold it a lot. I think back then we'd charge £30 a time and it cost us £10.

Nice little earner that and there's me giving away more trade secrets! 😎👍
