Help!!! Car will not stay running (lumpy)

Hi guys
My golf was running perfect until I parked it up for 2mths
Put a new battery on,have fuel and spark
But to get it to start I have to stamp on the accelerator and keep it turning over until it finally starts.
When it starts it's very lumpy and will not idle.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
It's a 1.6 gti

Timing.
Bad Petrol in the Tank.
Varnish build up.
Vacuum leaks

I would add a pint of SEAFOAM engine treatment to your GAS, or Marvel Mystery Oil.  This will help clean the Injectors, and start to remove any Varnish that is in the System from evaporation.

Timing was spot on before I parked it up…….
Fresh fuel put in (2 gallons)
I'll get some cleaner that you mentioned

Might be  worth checking the flap in the metering head isn't sticking……..nobody likes sticky flaps..😆

Mk1 2l TSR G60.  .getting. There twice as fast

Mk1 lhd diesel…….getting. There for half the cost

Will it upset anything if I go poking around the metering head?
Once I unbolt the top what do I need to do it's been over 15 years since I last open one ☺️

Help!!! Car will not stay running (lumpy)

Sounds familiar! I had my 1.8 8v tucked away for about 8 months and when I fired it up it ran like a bag of nails, changed plugs , leads dizzy cap and arm but not much improvement. Last weekend I cleaned the metering head and now she's purring like a happy kitten.

Take off the  large rubber cover,   it's the metal disc.  That control's the  fuel/ air  mixture  . ..Might be worth a  squirt of carb cleaner  and  very  gentle wipe around the edge of of the  disc…..

Metering head was spotless and moves freely 
Give it a squirt over with some cleaner anyway
But has made no difference

Help!!! Car will not stay running (lumpy)

I'm no expert but the fact that you have to stamp on the gas would make me wonder if the fuel filter my need replacing ( there only cheap ) or maybe injectors and failing that the cold start. Hopefully that might spark someone with a bit more knowledge than myself to narrow it down for you. Good luck

as above, try a fuel filter£10-£15 tops.. also have a look in your tank to see if you got any bits floating about in there… under your rear seat.. take it easy taking the cover off & shine a torch… if it's not any of those, it could be your WUR or fuel pressures, have you tested your 5th Injector (CSV)to rule that out? k-jet system is complex on how different 'bits/parts' run other parts in tandem if you like… the 5th injector will only run, i think, for 10 seconds on initial start to give extra fuel, linked to your thermotime switch on your outlet coolant flange on the head.. The WUR has a bi-metallic strip which is sensitive to engine temperature & controls the Fuel Distributor & Plunger to push the Air Sensor plate for more air/pressure… colder the car, more pressure & hotter less pressure to the injectors etc… pretty much when you put your foot down, there's more pressure pushed through the system for more fuel through the injectors…. hope that makes sense.. :thumbs:p.s. i also put some Millers fuel cleaner in my car every other fill (or £30 of fuel :)) just to keep it fresh… & i run it on Shell Nitro or Super Unleaded other garages do… there has been a write recently of the difference in standard unleaded & Super… either Moneysupermarket or someone like that & they said there wasn't much difference, mainly used on new 'performance' cars… but the Mk1's are our performance car :lol:

Tank is spotless 
Filter ordered
Does anyone know if the metering head plunger should be down/seated before start up as I noticed mine was up a few Milimetres 
Also spark plugs are wet every time I start it up so does this mean it's over fuelling???

Think I may of found the problem 
My rotor arm appears to be fouling the dizzy cap I got a new rotor arm today but it's still catching the dizzy.

Is this because it's a cheap one ?
Can I file it down where it's fouling?
