dashboard query

Does anyone know what the knob is on the top right hand corner of a mk1 golf dashboard, just above the rev counter, it allows you to turn the knob from 1 to 2 and back again, but didn't know what this is for or means ?

Can someone advise me what this is for or what it does ?

its for the MFA computer, it switches between mode 1 (current trip) and mode 2 (average of all trips since last reset)
