fuel lines

Post

right im about ready to start getting the underside of the shell put back together, it was originally a 1.3 and its going 20vt
ive bought a second hand fuel pump and accumulator set up, the lines are in rag order, and ive no lines on the carb petrol tank ,

now the question is, what size petrol lines do i need ?  and has anyone got any links as ive no lines to use as references, ( ie internal diameters and required lengths ) as theres loads

also i havent got the mk3 polo lift pump yet so is it feasible to start building it up and feed the lines and do the fuel pump set up at a later date or will there be no room to get the lines done once tank and rear beam is in place ,

thanks in advance

Originally the lines (internal diameter) would be 6mm and for a the 20vt youll need to fit 8mm fuel lines. If you dont want to faf about with the lift pump you could always fit a gti tank which has outlets at the bottom of the tank.

Hi,

Sorry to jack the thread but im at a similar stage with my 20vt, do the 1.3s have a different size original fuel line to the gti's?  I have left the original 1.3 lines in mine for the time being as on all the old conversion threads people dont seem to be changing the fuel pipe work?

im intending on using a facet red top lift pump, 1 ltr swirl pot and a walbro injection pump.

Better i find out now then stuffing my engine up!

Yes, the 1. have 6mm fuel lines but the lager engine 1.5+ will have the larger 8mm lines

Some people replace the lines with braided hoses, or I was planning on putting copper hose on mine but don't think that would be appropriate for a 20vt! Also, you can use plastic fuel lines from more modern cars which I think is a bit cheaper

cheers mazza, so every line is 8mm id , , then i take it its just fit the correct union banjo,

i take it the breather pipes are larger from looking at pics,

yeah i bought a new gti tank but was talked into taking it back by rj as he was saying the swirl pot in them is pants, so im going to run a lift pump and a 1lr external swirl pot

YeH I'm sure breather pipes are larger but only going from pictures like you say

I'm 99% sure what I've said is right but hopefully someone will be along to correct me if I'm wrong!

the fuel accumulator can be binned (metal pot with 2x fuel lines on the same side) unless you mean the swirl pot which is the plastic thing on post-84 cab/rocco gti with 4 pipe connections on, use that if you also drop a lifter pump in the tank

ive grabbed a lift pump from a mk3 polo, as per conversation earlier, , ive ordered some 1/2" id pvc pipe for the large breather, and also some 8mm id fuel line, so i can at least get the tank fitted,

i havent got a large plastic thing with 4 connectors on it mate
just a fuel pump and accumulator and related holders and brackets, the lines of which are either snipped or perished

Tubing & Hoses

Good place to buy fittings and hose from. I bought the yellow nylon hose and re-did the fuel hose on my Caddy with it.

I had the black nylon bud and it kinked really easy.  I got braided in the end for quite cheap, he also does the fitting all in with 8 Myra of pipe £60. Got the number if your stuck.
