Engine code GMS tall block????

hi, i acquired an engine block in my mk1 shell, it was loose in the back. At first glance i thought it might be an abf or 9a but today i sanded down the engine number and it says GMS 09 98 197, it has a number cast into the block of 97 and between the 98 and 197 there is a circle with an arrow going around it. Is this a vw remanufactured engine and if so how do i find out what block it is. The pistons have a hollow in them (possible 8 valve ? ) and the size is 82.465. Any help/info would be great cheers wozza.
