You get what you pay for when it comes to coilovers its worth spending the extra to get a good set with damping adustment and not fixed so you can set them to how you like. Ive got weitec tx fitted to mine there have about 20 levels from soft to hard. KW are the same company but more expensive think there made of stainless just stay away from the cheap ones on ebay. I had hks hypermax coilovers on a skyline gtt and there were surprisingly comfy so yeah comfy coilovers exist just depends on what you want to pay. Have a look at rallydesign they sell special sleeves, coils and adusters to change your standard setup into coilovers while retaining standard shocks.

You can get away with harsh(er) coilovers if you stick to 14's with 60 profile tyres. It's when you go coilovers AND low profile tyres that you get a harsh ride.

I've got Hotuning coilovers on my MK2 GTI and recently put 185x60x14s back on after running 195x50x15s. The difference is like chalk and cheese, much nicer now.

  • 1978 MK1 GL 2 door with 2.0 16v ABF, twin 40's, Recaros, lots of suspension mods. I'll get it back on the road one day.
  • 1991 MK2 GTI 4 door. Was my daily doing over 1000 ks a week until it hit a truck. RIP. Got another one now and loving it!
  • 1991 MK2 GTI 4 door for parts.
  • 1998 Seat Cupra + another used as a donor for the MK1
  • 1999 Passat Wagon. Needs street cred but at least it's a manual.

I've got AP Racing on a MK1 and it rides well. It's on the original Tarantulas though

I think having the raised mounts are a good idea on any suspension as it allows a lower ride without losing more travel.

It's the drop plates for the rear I'm not too sure about.

I started a thread asking about them but it must of been done to death as there were no replys.

Comfy coilovers are possible but expensive.

Also if to gain comfy you have to let the shock travel more then clearances could become an issue.

Why do you need drop plates for the rear ?

To even the car out?

If you used raised mounts at the front, the coilovers would be say adjusted half way down the height adjustment. where as the back would be fully wound down on the height adjustment.

Wouldnt that effect handling and the stroke of the shock?

I would of thought it would be better to fit raised mounts and drop plates together, then fit coilovers and set them both the same front and rear (adjustment for the height)

The raised mounts give you another 1 1/2" of free travel on the strut.

So if you have coilovers that allow a 75mm drop then fitted raised top mounts adjust the coilovers back up 1 1/2" for the extra comfort but the rears are still wound down to -75mm.

If you fitted drop plates that give you an extra 1 1/2" (not sure how much drop plates give you) then you could adjust the tears the same. You have then gain comfort on the front and back.

We'll tbh mate I'm not sure which is why I put that thread up to get some answers.

The threads I found there were split opinions on the drop plates.

So what is the price bracket when coil overs start getting comfortable  (adjustable )

I know there are cheap brands that have damping adjustment and I would like to avoid those.

I doubt I would fit drop plates though.

Thanks for replies

Not sure about price that there start to get good but you want to look into bilsteins, koni, kw, weitec and h&r most of these are around the 800 quid mark if ya want budget then go with AP for about 400 quid there a safe bet and i havnt heard any bad things about them you wont find anything cheaper than them that are worth having.

Had a look into it as i knew there were rebranded weitecs turns out there the gts models so just ride height adjustable unfortunatly. I think weitec and kw are changing there name to ST soon so you might be able to pick up some new old stock at a bargain prices.

Thanks for the info, I do like the kw gear. Even the second hand stuff gets snapped up pretty quick on ebay.
