Why do people do it?
Hi all,
Just wondered why people blank out their numberplate in pictures? i have only just started doing it myself, but no idea why haha What can people actually do with your numberplate, asides from using it on the same type of car for criminal activity, although i cant see that happening much with classic cars?
Thanks
Toby

I just wondered why, what can people do with your numberplate if they know it?

Why we do it in South Africa, criminals can browse the forums for cars that they want, use the numberplate to get your address from their connection at the license department and come and relieve you of your ride at your home (yes, it's really that bad over here…). Bit pointless really seeing that they can get your numberplate anytime you are driving the car.

people do it cause they think it will keep their car from getting stolen...if its gonna get stolen it will get stolen no matter what you do

I always thought it was because people were using your reg number for insurance purposes, Reg plate cloning. Uninsured drivers with the same car as yours, nick your number and get a 'no show' on ANPR cameras.

It is more relevant now that tax discs have disappeared. I suppose criminals can find a car online to their stolen one, get plate made up, and check its insured, mot'd and taxed online. Then drive about knowing that it looks all kosher to the ANPR. There's no tax disc to show that it could be a different car. Can't see many criminals targeting a mk1 golf to clone and drive about though. I do have 2 mk1 golfs the same colour so could theoretically just pay the once for ins, tax, mot and drive 2 cars, the only thing that could get it found out is if I write it off and insurance company impounds the wrong vehicle or the vin plate but doubt police would have roadside access to that.

I thought it was that people can track down where the car is registered (and usually stored) through asking the DVLA?
