Banger Rally Rwd and £500 or less

Post

Slightly off topic for a Mk1 owners club but i thought i would ask for some advice here. In May or July next year a friend and myself are driving from Scotland to Rome in 10 days as part of a trip and then back again via a shorter route.

The car has to be less than £500 and we have added a few requirements of our own; Rwd and Manual.

Now we have had a few ideas and some we have ruled out:

-IS200 High contender and if you get the sport model it comes with an LSD but a bit gutless for my liking.
-Mazda Mx5 Small nippy and lightweight but far to cramped for 14 days worth of camping gear and clothing and im well over 6 foot so cant imagine it would be  nice place to be.
-X type Jag (AWD admittedly) but would be very comfortable and the v6 seem pretty quick but maybe a bit boring
-Struggling to find any of the 6 cylinder 3 series for less than 500 and the 4 pots are gutless (Having owned a compact for a short while)

So now i roll it out to all of you for some suggestions what would you buy for £500 or less thats RWD Manual and fairly fun

80s Jag or Merc and hope for the best (although might struggle with the manual bit)

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Unfortunately the manual bit is non negotiable after to many debates over what car to get we agreed it had to be manual and rwd and we cant steer from that

I thought it's listed as a manual?

As with most Mercs of that age rust is a problem, the front wings all seem to rust very well…

Yeah it is listed as a manual but one of the photos shows the gearknob and its an automatic.

Rust issues are fine this is a banger really ducktape and stickers will cover them.

Possibly looking at a a4 quattro although its awd looks like a good car.

So after much searching and deliberation over a few cars this is what we have ended up with 2.5 e36 4 door

There was a reason it was £500 its pretty rotten as you can see from the sill which has already been cut off  (The wheels didnt come with the car)

Ill start a little build thread on it and our journey next year if their is any interest
