Back to standard shocks???

Post

My mk1 is on coil overs and while I love pushing it through roundabouts and voters with loads of understeer I feel I might use it more if it was a little more user friendly.

I have stands set up in the garage still and could put it back on the air. Would I regret this?hmmmm.

Could I go from rock solid to soft and bendy in one leap.

Thoughts and general views welcome

Pushing it through Voters…….. That would tend to get you arrested here, and impeding an election….lolololololol

Stock or OEM is easier on the older bodies……

Any bumpy corners or poor roundabout the standard set up will out perform the coil overs as you need some movement in the suspension to keep the tyres in contact with the floor, going to low or to stiff will give you worse handling than a standard VW set up.
About 35 mm is the lowest you want to go as the front wishbones start to bend upwards a lot after that sort of drop.

Nice set up if you still want to a slightly lowered look but a comfortable ride and good road holding, also comes with shorter bumps stops as you can't use the standard ones if you lower the car.

 that's what i used to love about my original Golf back about, ahem, over 20 yrs ago, no power steering, a bit of roll but i felt it was more of a challenge to drive… my cabby now is standard - it's 31 years old & still a blast to drive…

I just changed from coilovers back to standard dampers and eibach spring's, it's so much more enjoyable to drive now. I must be too old for coilovers too!

Back to standard shocks???

I am going to keep it low for the AGM and then put the standard set up back on. Looking at the coil overs during the mot then they are rusty pieces of poo now anyway.

You should bite the bullet and invest in some high end coilovers.

That way you've got, ride height you want vs ride you deserve.

Vogtland Coilovers.

The mk1 now rides like my 2017 Passat Estate.

Not ridiculous amounts of money. Vogtland make the springs and allegedly the shocks are by KW. I'd guess Vogtland make the springs for KW's coilovers………
