Advice on engine removal.

Post

Im just planning ahead and doing some research on removal of my engine. Ive never done anything mechanical before so id like some advice on this and some guidance.
I have friends in the motor trade and are able to help but i was wondering if there was a 'how to guide' of how to remove an engine and if it is easy enough for me to do.
If someone was able to help with  things like, first disconnect this, then that, then call for a mechanic:P:POr maybe i should call a mechanic:/
 Its a 1.8 carb cabby.

thanks

Put car on ramps then Take ex off at the C clamps ..take head off undo engine mounts take gearbox bolts out and take engine out from under the car I've done it twice this way easy job mark all wires and take plenty of photos …I'd  also take rad and battery off for extra space …and take the bonnet off as well

Why are you removing the head and the gearbox to take the engine out???

Unplug all wiring

Remove exhaust manifold and driveshaft bolts whilst your under there.

Coolent hoses to rad and remove rad, also the heater matrix hoses to the firewall.

Unclips the gear linkage off at the box

Remove clutch/throttle/speedo cables and fuel lines.

Remove front and back mounts

Take the weight of the engine on hoist, remove the two final side engine mount bolts and lower the engine to the floor or better onto a dolly, lift the car up higher than the engine and slide out the engine.

Label all your wiring if you're not great with wiring. Saves you headache later on.

Cheers peeps. Thats great.!! Its sounding easier to drop the engine out instead of lifting it out. Is that right?

Il make sure i mark all the cable and fuel lines to the carb. As looking at it it looks like a spaghetti junction.

Will there be sensors that i need to be aware of?

Thanks

Hi it does not say take the gearbox off….and it's  easier to take head off then you ant got to take front pipe off and it also makes it easier to remove it and re install it with the head off and its also easier to man handle….In my opinion :)

There is a guide in the haynes manual on what to remove.
I leave the head on as there is 2 hoops either side of it to attach a engine hoist but I lift the engine out and not lift the car, I also leave the gearbox on, inlet manifold and exhaust manifold on and just remove the C clips for the down pipe but I do have the tool to do it, (you can make one from exhaust clamps)

It's really up to you which way you do but I would guess lifting the car over the engine you will need a big hoist as there would be more weight in the car than just lifting the engine so make sure your hoist will lift the car as you don't want it falling over!
