Mk1 Golf GTI Project (webasto roof) - 95% complete.

After some dilberation, ive decided to chuck my Mk1 project up for sale as is. Ive got some parts ordered, so I will continue to work on it, so there is as little to do as possible. If theres no interest, then Ill get it road worthy, and then sell it.

:) I AM NOT BREAKING THIS CAR! :)

Several reasons have prompted this:

*Once it is road worthy, I wont be able to afford to tax, run and insure 2 cars.
*I could sell my daily (honda civic  ) but I dont want to run a mk1 full time as i do about 15k a year.
*Im bored of my civic! I want something a bit more fun.
*Mother wants it shifted from her garage, as ive evicted her car for the last 3 months!

Here is the build thread in readers rides.

Its a Y-reg, Silver, 3 door, 1.6 GTI, with 5 speed box, and Webasto Roof.

The shell is in brilliant condition, but the paintwork is unfortunately not. i cant find any evidence of welding. The sills are fantastic.

The interior was in a terrible state when I got it, but after stripping it, and alot of cleaning inside its in a very respectable condition now.

After being contacted by a previous owner, I discovered the webasto roof had been replaced at some point in its life. It is in fantastic condition, and totally watertight. Apparently to replace these its ?900…?!

The engine bay was also quite a state, with several bits missing. I replaced the battery, radiator, fan, leads, pipes, and then things like plugs, leads, all fluids. After this, I discovered the engine was beyond repair… :(

I have now replaced the engine with one that was apparently rebuilt 20k ago that I bought locally. I dont have any proof of this, but the condition of the engine would lead me to believe that its true. Ive now got this engine up and running, however, with continuing bad luck, I have now discovered the head gasket has gone. :( This i am starting to do, and hope to have finished by the weekend.

When the headgasket is repaired, It will have:

New headbolts.
New rocker cover gasket.
New exhaust manifold gasket.
New inlet manifold
New cambelt.

Once this is done the car should be fine. (it better be!! )

Parts I have replaced already:

Engine.
Rad & fan.
Battery.
All filters & fluids.
Fuel pump.
Headlights.
Door handles.
Front bumper.
Brake discs, and pads.

The only other things my mechanic has pointed out it needs for an MOT are: both outer CV boots need replacing, and the brakes need bleeding.

The car is currently wearing G60 steels, but I intend on keeping these for the next car, unless your really interested.

Currently declared SORN, so no tax or MOT, so will need to be trailored away.

Price as per the rules: ?1000. But open to offers, so dont be shy, but dont take the michael either…
