Description: VW 1979 (V reg) Mk1 Golf GTi - GTI Engineering (of Silverstone) engine conversion - still have original invoice for GTI engineering work. Non sunroof model. Back in the day used to be a show car.

I'm selling my beloved 1979 GTI which has had a total bare metal restoration. As many of you will know, The Series 1, MK1 Golf GTI is a very rare car. This is a 79' 4 speed that was registered early september of that year, therefore, making it one of the very first of the UK cars.

It's all original inside and out apart from the seats which have been replaced with a brand new half leather interior. Ive put a grill with the chrome bits on as i think it looks better It should have the red trim which is easy to find if you want to go totally factory.

I bought the car in 2002 - it was bast**dised / chaved up by the guy i bought it off (see pics…) He owned the car for over 10 years.

I spent a couple of weeks returning it to standard - I got rid of the square headlights & weird home made grill thing, body kit, momo steering wheel, tacky wheels etc etc… it was then left in my heated garage until now, when unfortunately for me the time has come to sell….

I always started it up every few weeks with no probs at all.

Work done in last 2 months in preparation for sale ( I noticed there was rust in the fuel system…) - Complete brand new Bosch fuel injection system including:

New oem VAG fuel tank not gsf etc…
New fuel lines - feed and return
New filler neck and connecting pipe
New fuel pump
Re-conditioned accumulator
New braided injector lines
4 new fuel injectors and rubber seals
New cold start valve
A new re-conditioned K-Jet 1.6 Bosch metering head / fuel distributor
New fuel filter and associated braided pipes
K&N Air Filter
New dizzy cap, rotar and leads.

As the old fuel tank was off I took the opportunity to totally hammerite the underside of the car, I also hammerited & under sealed the new fuel tank to protect it from stone chips etc…
Ive also took the plastic arches off all roundso it can be inspected 100%

A full body restoration was carried out around 1999/98. I have some pics of this restoration.

Work carried out in 1999 - See below list for full specs:

Stripped down to bare metal
New inner & outer wings
All sills replaced
New doors
New rear arches
New lower valance
New boot hatch
Fully rust proofed
New carpets
Jamex fully adjustable coilovers
Uprated brake system - Scirocco rear beam conversion - disks all round
Upper strut braces
New windscreen with a very rare, original VAG top tint
4 VDO gauges that work & light up

The engine is a 1.6 which has been balanced, gas flowed & fully ported and polished. It also has a high lift cam fitted, 4 branch straight through manifold, DTM style exhaust, brand new heavy duty clutch & flywheel etc etc…. work on engine carried out by GTI Engineering of Silverstone. Car has original GTI Engineering plate riveted to the front turret. The engine is pretty much fully chromed but is showing LIGHT surface rust on most parts (can be wire brushed off and re-polished easily as the chrome plating is very thick and of good quality) remarkably the engine has only done around 250 trouble free miles since the conversion was carried out!

Work needed:

The paint work could definatley do with a touch up here and there….just scratches and knocks from sitting in the garage so long. Maybe a T cut would bring her up again but she defo needs a bit of minor attention to ger her perfect again. Where I had the cover on the car for so long it has left a slight pattern on the roof - T CUT TIME!

Indicators need screwing in to the bumper and the wiring plugged in, i just havnt got round to it. Headlining coming away at the back a little bit - just needs a bit of spray on glue to fix. Could do with a new locking petrol cap tbh. Will need two new front tyres as they go down after a few days. Fog light needs a new lense.

It does need general tidying up as it has been sitting in my garage for 10+ years ….! It doesn't have an MOT but would easily pass with only a very, VERY small amount of work required.

Ive quite a lot of pictures of the original restoration and it also comes with a service book (not filled in much) & a massive amount of receipt's for works / upgrades carried out in the early to mid eighties. Also, as i mentioned before, it has the original GTI Engineering invoice for the engine - see pics

Starts first time, every time, clean revving - it is a very fast car indeed, you can hit 70mph in 2nd, not for the fain hearted.. approx 140bhp It sounds deep due to the four branch manifold although the exhaust is blowing around the mid section - just needs the bracket tightening up.

No rot or rust on the car at all apart from a small bubble on the bonnet. Metal is like new, so solid everywhere…Arches perfect, spare wheel well perfect, inner wings perfecto etc etc…. Very rare to find a 1979 gti in this rot free condition.

Viewing via prior arrangement - car is located in Ealing, West London - Good luck everybody - I would prefer to see it go to a genuine mk1 Golf / VAG enthusiast if possible as I do love this car. Car will have to be trailered of towed away as no mot / tax / hasn't been driven in a while…car has had many ££££'s spent on it.
