Mk1 5 door 20vt sleeper project! 90% there thousands spent

well as ive got a new toy my mk1 has got to go. Now up to 4 vws and haven't got the space or money for them all. This was on ebay but ebay idiots have messed me about again. If it doesnt sell as is, il strip the 20vt out and stick a carb engine in and sell it that way

The car started life as a 1983 1.1 formal E golf 5 door, the last time I checked there were only around 50 left registered in the uk with this being one of them. The car initially belonged to a family friend who owned it for around 2 years before selling it my brother as his first car. The car was starting to show its age so was prepped for paint, before my brother went to uni and couldn't afford to finish the job. This is where I stepped in buying it from him and taking it on as a project. All the necessary welding was done (there wasn't much only a bit on the arches and scuttle) before the car was treated to a full glass out doors off respray in the original mars red over a white base to make the colour brighter still. I have photos of each stage of this to show corners weren't cut. The finish isn't concurs but certainly not bad and looks smart polished up sat in the sun as im sure youl agree.

The original 1.1 engine was never going to cut it but to get it tested and enjoy the end of last summer it was serviced and put back on the road as was. It only covered around 200 miles before being taken back off the road for the winter so hasn't seen salt since it was painted. With the 1.1 out i set about deciding on a suitable engine upgrade and although a 1.8 carb engine would be easy, it didn't have the appeal of a 20valve turbo from a mk4 golf, so thats what i went with.

A full mk4 donor was bought with 120k on clock and full service history, this meaning every part possible would be available and the car could be driven before the engine was removed. All the parts from this are included in the sale such as clocks, fuel pump, keys, immobiliser, ecu, radiator etc. Etc.

As i didn't have time to carry out the swap a local specialist garage was entrusted, the engine was mounted using crazy quiffs conversion mounts and a hydraulic clutch conversion fitted. The wiring is to the stage of around 90% there with the engine cranking over on the key with the majority of the remaining wires labelled ready for finishing. Sadly this is where the project stops as like i say i have neither the space nor money for 2 projects so this one has to go. If you knew what you were doing there's probably no more than a few long weekends to get it on the road, and once finished would be worth easily double what it is now.

To try and summarise il list what there is, some of this is fitted, some just included and some parts brand new! Il try and put prices i paid to give an idea of the value of parts alone:

1983 mk1 shell freshly painted in original mars red (done around 200 mile since paint)

1.8 20 valve turbo engine from mk4 golf, AGU engine code (large port head) brand new cambelt, water pump, tensioners etc. Complete with all ancillaries turbo, alternator etc. (engine alone worth £600-£700)

Standard 1.8t downpipe for modification

O2j 5 speed gearbox from mk4 golf, complete with hydro clutch conversion

Crazyquiffs conversion mounts (mounts and clutch conversion £300)

100mm drive cups for gearbox £70 (these were hard to find )

100mm drive shafts and hubs (early ones aren't suitable) £100

Scirrocco callipers with braided hoses and adaptor brakets to suit 280mm discs (no discs included) £50

Cable change gearlever from mk4 ready to fit

Mint mk2 GTI interior. Theres a tiny amount of wear to the drivers bolster, but it's one of the best ive seen. The front seats fit straight in the rears will need altering however i do have 2 standard rear seats aswell. £180

Deep dish 15 inch alloys with good tyres (could do with paint but look ok)

Brand new windscreen at time of paint

Brand new front mount intercooler with custom pipework still in box £180

Mk1 gti lift pump £40

As you can see there's a fortune in bits alone (over £2k) not to mention all the hours that have been put in. Theres a lot of bits not listed but included such as mk4 fuel pump for modification, mk4 dash board, the carpet and dash from the mk1 (this is all removed at present), mk1 front and rear bumpers ( i chose to run without, i also have some square lamps to go in the rear bumper holes). Plus any other bits i find. The original 1.1 has gone and the engine mount swapped for a big block one, so should you wish you could easily fit a 1.8 carb engine and sell the turbo on. Theres probably 95% of the bits needed to finish

To summarise the engine is in and properly mounted, the hydro clutch conversion is in needs a hose running), its sat on its own wheels and cranks over on the original mk1 key. It mainly wirng thats needed to finish the job, along with putting the other bits back together.

Theres probably loads ive forgotten. Technically the car is still mot'd although obviously it doesn't drive so will need trailering away along with plenty of space for all the parts

wanting £1800 Ono NOW £1600 FIRM BEFORE I STRIP IT, wont cost a lot in parts to finish, just dont have the time or space
Car is in Sheffield , pics will be up shortly
