 Description:

Well I've only recently bought this car and it's a mk1 I've always been in love with. I had very big plans for it with an engine change, but due to living in Sheffield and the car being back in Durham it's not been possible for me to get any work done on it! It's a shame because it's one of the prettiest mk1s I've seen!

So here's all the info, good points and not so good points. It's a 1981 Golf GLS which is similar high spec to a GTi but with a 1.5 carb engine. Clocks show 135k but the milometer hasn't worked for a few years so obviously more more. In very good condition for its age.

Good points:

-12 months MOT, Tax til end of January
-Very solid! Hard to find a mk1 that isn't rotten. No welding needed.
-Recent respray in black, polishes up well with minimal stonechips/dings
-Brown interior is in good condition with minimal bolster wear. One small hole in the drivers seat but could be easily repaired. Very rare interior with pretty much everything there including carpets, parcel shelf, dashboard etc.
-Engine is spot on - drives fantastically, smooth, quiet and very nippy. No nasty tappety noises to speak of
-All the leccy works, heaters, heated rear screen & wipers etc, everything.
-6" teledials on the front, 7" on the back
-New strut top mounts
-Continental tyres with plenty of life
-Fitted with coilovers so height is adjustable
-All red rears, but indicators flash orange.
-Pressed metal number plates
-New clutch about 1000 miles back
-Original manual/handbook and loads of history going back to the '80s.
-New discs, pads drums, shoes and cylinders not so long ago
-I have a full 16v 1.8 KR engine conversion to go in - engine, box, clocks, wiring and a stainless conversion manifold which would be included along with all the other parts if the asking price is met

Not so good points:

-Needs a new front wing fitting after a minor dunch (old fella reversed into the car at low speed). I was quoted less than £100 to supply and fit a new wing. I have one new pattern drivers wing and a genuine VW passenger wing ready to be painted.
-Pierburg carb can occasionally be temperamental in damp weather which leads to sometimes having difficulty idling when cold. Fine once up to temp though and no problem most of the time or in the warmer weather. Pierburgs are known for being temperamental in the cold unless they're properly sorted. If you're planning to put the 16v in this shouldn't matter anyway!
-Probably due a service, I was holding off due to fitting the 16V engine though. I have a timing belt kit and water pump which will come with the car should you wish to keep the current engine.
-While the exterior was painted black, the interior and inside the engine bay is still the original brown colour. Due to the interior all being brown, the small parts of metal that are visible actually fit in well with the colour! If you were anal enough about it you could have the interior sprayed if you wanted!

The car can come with all the parts I have been collecting if the asking price is met -  I have two replacement wings, mk2 16v engine with gearbox, wiring loom and clocks. Hottuning stainless conversion manifold worth £275 new. Gti steering rack, 5 speed gearshift linkage, full gearshift repair kit, mk2 16v master cylinder and brake servo for mk1 upgrade, mk1 gti 239 vented brakes, calipers, carriers, etc. exhaust heat wrap for manifold, central locking fitting kit. Spare rare brown parcel shelf.

Overall, a great mk1 that will turn heads everywhere! It comes with all those rare pieces everyone loves including chrome strips on the body and windows, etc. as well as a lovely retro brown interior. The brown inside works so well with the black exterior! While the car is perfectly driveable like this, if you're a perfectionist looking for the perfect project that isn't going to need stripping to a shell or welding done, etc. then this is right for you!
