Description:  Originally delivered to Mr A W Dakin and his wife, by Castle’s of Church Gate, Leicester, in April 1978, as a VW MK1 Golf 1500 LS AUTOMATIC. With Mr A W Daykin passing away shortly afterwards, his wife Dorothy Dakin, both kept and used the car up until 2004, when I took over ownership and became the second owner of this amazing vehicle. The car was complete and in very good condition for a 26 year old Golf and was MOT'd and used straight away. Shortly afterwards, in late 2004, the decision was taken to bring the body shell up to a fantastic condition. With the shell stripped, new VAG front wings, a front panel, and a rear passenger side arch panel was welded in. All the body work was carried out by a Mercedes trained panel beater and professionally painted in its original paint colour code VW11a - Riyadh yellow.

In 2006, the need for more speed and durability initiated the decision for a full engine and gearbox conversion. The engine, gearbox and loom conversion was carried out by Jody @ Midland VW in Cannock in May 2006 to 1.8 16v KR, 5 speed manual specification giving it 149 BHP. Since then it was treated to a continual ‘rolling restoration’ over the next 4 years, resulting in the decision to further upgrade the engine. The next engine conversion was carried out by Del Mahi @ JSM Autos in Birmingham in May 2010 to 2.0 16v ABF specification giving it 172.6 BHP according to the dyno report from Stealth Racing UK LTD. The 5 speed MK2 GTI 16v gearbox shifts well and does not present with any issues.

ENGINE, TRANSMISSION & ELECTRICS

1997 SEAT IBIZA 2.0 16 valve engine, mated to a 1989 VW MK2 GOLF GTI 16v gearbox. Excellent service history so it is in fine mechanical condition. The car has just passed its MOT with zero minors. The gearbox feels tight and precise and has benefited from a replacement gear linkage kit. All the electrics have been professionally fitted and the loom(s) have been professionally mated to one another respectably. The original 1978 pod dash board is in full working order, and the MK1 Golf now benefits from using a 1989 VW MK2 Golf GTI 16v fuse box.

ACHIEVEMENTS

This MK1 is a tried and tested, reliable, hardworking, long haul tourer. France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and more recently Spain; are just a handful of the places I have driven to in this MK1 Golf, and never has it broken down. This speaks volumes for this 34 year old classic. Not only acting as a cross continental cruiser, the MK1 also ticks all the boxes for fun - the Col de Turini, Nurburgring and a dash from Bilbao to London in 24hrs. So rest assured this MK1 Golf is not just a show car, it works in real life.

In 2010 this MK1 Golf won the much coveted ‘Best MK1 of Show’ at GTI International. It has also been featured in the UK’s Golf+ magazine and France’s VW POWER magazine respectably. If you follow this link: http://kingsofthemountain.co.uk/ it will take you to the website detailing some of the European drives in the MK1 Golf and a video clip. More recently, the MK1 Golf has featured in a professionally shot, short film based in the South London area.

HISTORY FILE

This Mk1 Golf was first registered in April 1978 and stayed with its original owner for the first 26 years until Mrs Daykin became too old to drive. During her ownership Mrs Daykin had the car serviced on a regular basis, all of which are recorded in the original VW service book. I purchased the car in 2004 with 32k miles on the clock and continued to keep the car to an excellent standard, with all the receipts for work done kept and stored in the history file.

The MK1 Golf also comes with its original document holder that has the owner’s manuals and guides. The odometer reads 97,683 miles, although the actual mileage for the car is approximately 54,000 miles as the twin-pod dash clocks were replaced with MK1 Scirocco twin-pod dash clocks in 2008. The 2.0 16v ABF engine conversion was completed in 2010 with a 55,000 mile engine, which has since completed around 10,000 further miles.

The service file is stuffed full of invoices from Volkswagen, VW Heritage, Midland VW and Venom Motorsport showing that no expense has been spared on bringing it into this condition. Recently serviced, MOT'd with zero minors and newly taxed; it should make someone very happy indeed!
