winter work

Hi,

Looked through the how much does it cost post by Drew but not really what I was looking for so…

I have some work planned for winter.  Initially I was thinking of putting in a gas flowed head but I have only had the Campaign for 6 months and only driven her for 3 of those.  I've decided that I just want to put her back to the way she is supposed to be.  I do have a few non-standard parts on her but nothing of any significance.  There is a set of Koni's and a S/S exhaust.  The exhaust is staying as it was only fitted the day before she went off the road but the Koni's need replaced but I have new suspension chosen.

Just wanted to know if there was any workshop manuals other then your basic haines manual that would help me with the stripdown and re-build?  I will be doing most of the work myself with my mans help but obviously the head will be tidied up by someone else along with new bearings in the gearbox being done by someone else.

Any help or advice would be great.

Thanks,

Sx

Try the Bentley Rabbit manuals.

they are usually available from Amazon and they had a sale on a couple of months ago, ?25 instead of ?40.

Apparently the copyright laws are different in the US so they can just copy the VW manuals!?

Suz,

If you are going down the serious resto route I can recommend the Haynes VW Golf and Jetta Restoration Manual by Lindsay Porter. Along with the Mk1 Haynes its a good combo with lots of photos of Mk1 engine stripdown and rebuild, bodywork removal and trim work.

Its cheap on Amazon too.

….and here's one more (swear by it myself)  its

"Poor Richards Rabbit Book"  or "how to keep your Volkswagen Rabbit Alive for the Compleat Idiot" by Richard Sealy (actually a Limey)

Now long out of print but available from the US of A through one of the links on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/offer-listing/0912528176/ref=dp_pb_a//002-0650165-3905652?condition=all

Most Rabbits of the 1979-1985 era were fuel injected (including the Rabbit GTI) so this book give a try.  I bought one new in 1979, lent it out and never saw it again.  I recently got a "used" copy from the US via the links above..took abaout 4 weeks to get but worth the wait.

"Repair procedures, anectdotes, artful diagrams all help one keep a sense of balance whilst repairing a Volkswagen water cooled car.."

"In the same spirit as the original 'Compleat Idiot',technical advice is mixed with humour to inform and entertain."

Tells you what tools you need for each job, when you need a helping hand (a friend) and any special considerations (like "a healthy regard for the explosive nature of gasoline").  On occasion it does refer you to the dealer but only when absolutelt necessary..

Gets my vote

Cheers
