windows HELP PLEASE

I know this shouldn't be in chat but somewhere else, but I thought I'd get a quicker answer here. How on earth do you get the glass out of the tailgate? I've been struggling for the last two hours and getting nowhere.
I've got to replace the tailgate I've got but the replacement has clear glass and mine's green so need to swap them over. Please lat me know how in idiot proof description. Thanks :banghead:

Sorry - I'm not sure how its done.  What I would do - if you still don't get anywhere, is stick the new tailgate on the car with the clear glass in and chuck the old tailgate in the back.

Drive down to a place that fits windscreens and ask them to swap them oevr for you - okay, it might cost a few quid but it'll save you potentially hours and strugling and the risk of damaging the tailgate or the glass - plus they'll have all the tools and any sealant/trim/repair bits they need there.

Cheers steve. Might come to that. I'll keep struggling for a while and if anyone can help in meantime please do.

Use a screwdriver to hook the inner lip of the rubber  over the metal (from the inside) then with another screwdriver slowly work the rubber over the metal and then gently but firmly push the glass . I found it easier to start at a corner and having someone to catch the glass on the outside helps , you will also find it easier if the boot is shut . To reinstall find yourself some strong twine or wire lay it in the groove all the way round over lapping at the ends ,have someone holding the glass in the right position with gentle pressure and then from the inside pull the wire .You should find that the wire pulls the rubber lip over the metal. Sometimes you need a lubricant ,waxoil is good but avoid washing up liquid as this has salts in it that will help you car rust quicker . If you need anymore help send me an email .

Thanks all. I split the seal as trying to remove it so in the end just ripped it out  rear screen out now. I'm getting rid of few rust areas and then will respray. Once done will fit it and take it to autoscreen place like steve said with the original and get them to take the screen from that and put it in. Hopefully the seal's OK on that when they take it out :|

would like to say the screwdriver method works, easier with 2 people and watch your paint :?

the easiest way to remove the rear screen and rear 1/4 windows is to lay on your back in the car and force them out with your foot. all you have to do is put pressure evenly in both corners and they will pop out . toughened glass does not crack or break as easily as laminated. i have been using this method for years and i have never broke one

are you serious about that? Do you mean once you have got the seal over the lip you kick them out or do you just do it before that? I can just envisage glass flying through the air and decapitating someone or worse, smashing and having to be replaced at a big price

Use the screwdriver method - it is safe, easy to do and I've not broken one piece of glass doing it - all single handed

My old boss used to use the lying on yer back method he never broke anything either , i use the two screwdrivers , just one thing if your going to be working around the screen apertures (welding filling etc) try to get the shape right as it can make putting the screen back in very tough if there are imperfections , i went though 3 screens on my camper due to dodgy welding !.
