Whistling Cabby driving me mad!!

Our newly aquired cabby has an annoying whistling noise when you're driving with the roof up, it's coming from the front, sounds like it's coming from just behind the drivers sunvisor, it gets louder and louder the faster you go, so it must be air leaking in.

Now I've tightened the hooks on the roof catches and that's made no difference, is it just a case of needing a new seal across the top of the windscreen or is there something else I should try?

first of all clean and check the condition of that windscreen header seal and the plate on the roof that meets it. Assuming no splits/tears then I would start by reviving by spraying with a good silicon lubricant and also rubbing some vaseline into it. Check the front of the roof makes contact acros its whole length evenly when the roof is closed.

I know you are pretty confident its coming from the front, but also check the sides, in particular if the side tension wires are still in one piece and doing their job.

be carefull tightening them front hooks, if you over do it they can snap.

let us know how you get on.

Talking of stereo… it may be obvious but my ariel make an awful racket when I've got the roof down (it probably does it when its up too!!), that's a whistling sound.  :dontknow:

Worn door seal, check that the felt channel that the window glass slides up and down is in the correct position too, showing no gaps between it and the rubber door seal at the top. As above too.

Cheers, I'll have a fiddle with the rubber, it's definitely 100% coming from the front.

I used to get a very annoying, very loud wind rushing sound when doing about 80+. When I replaced the roof I made sure the outer roof lining sat flush with the header seal and the noise was gone. If the front edge of the lining has a gap it isn't fitted right, or maybe the hood's shrunk over the years and caused it to pull the front edge up.

This is how it should be:

Dont mean to hijack the  thread but i have this same problem but i think its due to one of my roof handle catches is very loose. When its unhooked it rattles and when the roof is closed the handles isnt as strong as the other side.

so how do you tighten the roof handles?

apols not the best angle for the picture, but hopefully you can make out the handle, the hook, the lock nut and the thread for the hook. Essentially the hook just screws in and out with a locknut to hold it in a fixed position. You must be careful not to over tighten or you will snap the hook. Right pressure is when you pull the handle to lock the hood in place it should progressively get harder and then spring closed when just beyound the mid point. If it feels to tight it probably is. Normally 3 or 4 threads showing is about right, thats just under 3 thread on the pics.
