what is seat fabric/material made from, & how much is ne

hi there, in my car im currently running some front sportline seats, and wanted to replace the centres for something else, along with creating a matching rear bench. i will obtain the black fabric from recaro for the rear seats, and use some type of plaid for the centres of both front and back.

question is, what material is normally used for this type of thing? is it a poly cotton, a wool/cotton blend? the reason i ask is because i want quite a specific tartan/check and simply cant afford to use normal automotive trimmers at nearly 70 pounds a metre! so i plan to obtain fabric from somewhere else, but need to know what blend/what type of material to use.

ideally i would like a very very hard wearing, similar to that of the black fabric used on the bolsters of the sportline recaros. i would prefer a rough, tough and slightly matt fabric like the original mk1 gti cloth instead of the somewhat 'sheen' look fabric used on seats such as the mk3 gti

i remember reading i need 5 metres of cloth to adequately trim centres of both the fronts and rears?

cany anyone offer any advice on this?
thanks very much

Look at furniture manufacturers

yeh but they are completely different, some are pure cotton, some are a polyester blend, some use nylon, some use 'rayon' i think its called… so ideally i'd like to copy what most car seats use, they must be slightly more universal as they always serve a sole purpose.

for example coach seat fabric had a very high polyester content, which is why they are god awful sweaty but hard wearing. some home furniture is 100% cotton which will last no time at all.

i actualy own a upholstery company and i cant give you a straight answer, car upholstery is pretty specialist and a different game to domestic all together, call a good trimmers and ask them for samples of what they offer (obviously tell them youre thinking of them doing it) they should have a name of fabric and make up on a sticker on the back of the sample

yeh, this is what i was trying to avoid. i don't want to waste someone's time and ask them to obtain fabrics for me if i'm not going to use their company to retrim my seats,

in saying that, i will definetely pay someone to do my rear seat, and for the very little work it takes to do the centres once removed, i may as well pay for all of it, get the fabric and finish i want…. probably time to start talking to local trimmers then!

thanks for the help

I might be interested in the Sportline centre fabric that you remove, if the price is reasonable.
