What have I got? GTI with a 1600 carb?

I have just got a Cabrio in good condition, not a show winner but a useable daily car. Main oddity is the engine, badged a GTI but is a single choke weber carb on a 1600 (I think) V5 says 1600, has 1.6 cast into the head but doesnt look as if its been modded too much from Injection….(goes very well if it is a 1600)

Any ideas, from looking about the engine number on the VIN plate starts with DX which I think is the code for the 1800, it has a MFA stalk but it does nothing, the back of the speedo looks to have something missing, could this be for the MFA.

Has vented discs and twin headlamps but anything can be changed in nearly 23 years.

Any ideas??? :dontknow:

Couple of things to check.

1. What does the code on the engine say?

2. Does the head have ports for the injectors in (on the back of the head by the inlet manifold)?

3. Does the water pipe on the front of the head have a large temperature switch (thermo time switch) in?

I cleaned up the engine number today and found JB 765058 so not the DX it should be. What does the JB mean is it a 1600, only query is I had to get an exhaust for it, and the 1500 system was the same the 1600 was totally different…. Kinda hoping its a 1500 then its cheaper tax

Didnt look on the head but it has 1.6 cast on the front so may be it is.. dont know about the water pipes, I think its just a top hose nothing in it.. bit awkward as the car isnt here  :banghead:

JB is 1500 engine. I'm pretty sure the 1986 cabby would not have come with this as standard. So the good news is at least your tax is cheaper.

Could have started life as a GTI but been fitted with the 1.5 at some point.

Right its sorted, it was a GTI, built October '85, has now got a 1500 carbed engine in it. All the car side of the wiring is still there for the injection, twin fuel pies etc. The job now is to hunt out the bits I need to swop it back to a proper 1800 GTI soon. It runs ok as it is so will let her use it for a while until I get all the bits then do the swop over a weekend… Off we go shopping then
