Unless there is rust in scuttle area/around windscreen it could be a simple fix?

1. Check under bonnet at each end of the bulk head - the area with plastic cover which houses the blower motor, wiper motor etc. At each end of this 'trough' there are rubber drain tubes about 30mm diameter. This whole area fills up with leaves and crud and over the years, well just months, can block up the drain tubes. The water then has to go somewhere, which is over the lip around the blower motor housing and into passenger footwell. Clear any debris/leaves etc out and if drain tubes are blocked, probably the answer!
2. If not above, then check your sunroof drain tubes are working. Open sunroof and get a jug of water and poor into the front corners of drain channel. The water should exit around the lower A-pillar on to the ground. If not, there could be your problem

Let us know how you get on and if solution for point 2 needed!

Cheers
Andy

Unfortunately this can be a common problem wth Mk1's and there can be thousand and one places the water is getting in. Can be coming in through the bulkhead, running down the bonnet release cable or other cables that run through the bulkhead on the passenger side. Also possible that the passenger side door seal is or sunroof drainage tubes leaking. In more extreme situations can be water getting under a dodgy screen seal and even through a rot hole under the screen. A tell tale sign of this is bubbling paint around this area.

Best thing is to pull the carpet up and see if there is any obvious signs of where the water is coming from. If its just rained should be obvious. As you are experiencing, such leaks can play havoc with electrics, especially as the fusebox is mounted under glove box. Worth getting on top of quickly as water damage can mean a new fusebox. Here's a few old posts on the subject that may be useful.
