Water in my footwells!
As you may have seen on other posts, i've decided to do a race project rally thing with my golf gti, trouble is i was installing some new front speakers when i came across ice in the passengers rear foot well. Cutting a long story short, it was full of water!
Old water considering the smell! I've removed the entire carpet, sound dampening sponge/foam (i assume it was that) and a layer of rubber stuff??? All of which was soaking!
My concern is underneath that is really rottern, i initially thought it was the floor pan, but that's under this painted stuff which is kind of tough but not? if that makes any sense?!?!
Can anyone just reassure me as to what i'm getting myself into as i intend to rub down and hammerite the entire inside!
Below is a picture of the rear left right passenger footwell having removed the carpet and a layer of foam. That black looking stuff is the rubber stuff i mentioned above…
This is the worst of the rear footwells. I've put a red line around the areas which i assume is the floorpan appearing through, unpainted etc? But what is the painted crud on top? Some kind of factory filler???
I appreciate any help. Thanks.
P.S May sound stupid, but how do you remove the front seats!? Trying to find a Haynes manual, IMPOSSIBLE!

under the front seats at the front of the seats and in the middle you will see a runner bar with holes in it which is the adjustment for the seat moving back and forwards on the end of this bar is a small nut and bolt to stop it sliding out , remove this bolt lift the handle to move the seat back and forward , push the seat all the way to the back till it comes out of this runner then just keep going till the seat comes free from the side runners and lift straight out ohh remember to remove the plastic covers that are next to hand brake held on with one screw close to rear seats
good luck
the wet floor could be blocked drain holes under the bonnet near the windscreen common problem this time of year

That thick black stuff is factory sound deadening. It's like a sticky backed bitumen pad. Over time it goes brittle and thats why it's broken away where the ribs of the floor pan are (on pic with red lines around). You can gently remove most of the black pads with a hammer and a blunt chisel and then clean any last bits off with a wire wheel. I wouldn't heat it up to remove it as it'll get messy.

Mine was on the passenger side, i removed dash to find excactly where it come in.
On the passenger side of dash, their is a groove in the metal work, this ends up directly over the fusebox and water drips onto it, i had a problem last week whereas no wiper and no heater.
Water had leaked on fusebox and one of the relays i think number 18 had totally burnt out and was caked in water, i have plenty of spares over the years.
Removed mat from under carpet and left out to dry, it wasnt soaked but wet, and no smell so recently leak had started.
Rmoved and cleaned fusebox and put a clear silicon down the windscreen rubber, all sorted. no more leaks.
But also do check the drainage holes and rubbers as suggested by other members also.
I will find a pic of dash and post up where the water runs for you

You can still get the grommets from Vw
All the best tracing the source, the interior of mine is stripped out at present with just the drivers seat in place

Does this look familiar?
Mine is leaking so much water in its untrue
was getting through 2 bath towels a day in both footwells when it was really raining
I do have wind deflectors but have had the windscreen fitted 3 times. Last time they told me its not coming in through the windscreen but somewhere else. Not sure what to believe though

what simon says about chassis rail is true, 2 of them one either side, i cover mine with thin sheets of metal silicon sealed and underseal over the top.
To defo find out if deflectors are at fault bud, simply have someone else poor water from a kettle at the top of the deflector and see if watercomes through.
Where the delfector meets the windscreen seal you will notice the seal has lifted slighty, if you have had a new screen fitted like i had it will not be sealed correctly and water will pass inside.

Anyway they are being ripped off tomorrow and staying off, i'll seal screen then to make sure it doest happen again.
Never had water problem until fitted those blasted deflectors.

Stripped out dash, 10 minutes job, got to fuse box and removed it, removed the deflectors and put a car sheet on car overnight, hopefully no rain tomorrow so i can seal the screen from leaks.
Anyway decided to strip fusebox, then come across this, aswell as it being waterlogged, one of the pins that a fuse connects to had snapped, think this is the headlight problem.
Was going to dry fusebox out and solder the pin back on but bought new box from gsf instead.
So my advice to mk1 owners would be anything electrical take the front cover off your fusebox and examine it carefully just incase there is a fault inside.
I would have never found this if i wasn't curious has to what was inside.
Dont forget people mine is only a 10 year old box, so a 25 year old one would surely have more problems if any
Once dry weather appears i'll seal up windscreen and fit new fusebox in.
Yes i do bite my nails, well after past 2 days, think you would
And no more deflectors, yeh!

if you not sure about the explaination of what they say, remove your dash, look a the channel i shown'd you and poor water at the top of the deflector, see if it comes in bud, that way your defo sure bud .
Bud hat channel wherre your water is coming from, their is only one of them along the metal framework of the dash area bud, i Honestly believe it's coming from your windscreen fella
