Water in Driver Footwell!

Hi Folks,

Car has been sitting on the drive the past few days and when I got in it this afternoon I noticed for the first time that I have a puddle in the drivers footwell :(

I know this is a common prob with the mk1's but I'm unsure of where to look first to prevent it from happening again.

It does have a aftermarket sunroof, but I 99% sure it's water tight!

Any ideas :dontknow:

Check out the drain holes at each end of the bulkhead area beneath the screen. These can get blocked up, allowing water to collect in this compartment and flow in through the heater.

Open the bonnet and look in the scuttle tray. At each end there is a drain hole with a rubber boot thing. These get blocked with dead leaves etc and water backs up over flowing into the cab via the blower/heater matrix (under the flimsy plastic cover).

OR?. The windscreen seal has gone

OR?.. it could be coming thru the door if the plastic membrane has been damaged in the past.

OR?. It?s not unknown for it to be leaking via the hatch or rear lights and to run into the front foot well making you think its come from somewhere up front.

You need to remove the carpets and sound deadening and squeeze as much water out as poss and then dry it in the airing cupboard or similar. If you leave it in, it will never dry out and start to smell a bit??

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Mine did this when I replaced the windscreen.  Some screens especially the cheaper ones don't quite fit properly.  Running some sealant under the windscreen seal has cured the problem 100%.

The real pain is taking out the carpets and soundproofing to dry everything out properly.
