if you can put the time and effort into it,you can strip and polish the black plastic coated ones. :D

the *chrome* or polished ones go for stupid money on ebay.

thanx for the suggestion - my golf is black but at some point it's had a full respray (again in black) the trims are now also black, am i right in thinking they were once chrome and would this alter my approach to stripping them?

hi m8.

they are probably just steel,id say most of em out there are but lots are still sold as chrome.

the only diffarence is that once youve polished em up,you just need to keep on top of em with polish/autosol or similar.

i used to polish mine everytime i polished the car. 8)

you can smear a bit of wd40 on them too which looks after them for a good while.

ps:you could take them for plating too???
neil.

is it just a case of taking them off and dipping them in a paint stripper?
is it wise to replace the clips?

If your Golf is a GTi or a base model they are the black, thin type. Otherwise they are the chrome and rubber thick type.

Just sand them down to get the paint off then polish with progessively finer wet sand paper.

You don't need to replace the clips unless they are broken.
