Wabasto steel sunroof

Hi
I have a Mk1 golf gti 83
with a rusting roof?
Can the wabasto roof be taken out?
How can i cover it
What are my options i can buy a new wabasto roof from wabasto but it is ?895
Or can i buy a rag top
Or event weild it over.
I am lost with this problem as everyone i have asked has not had an answer.

If any one has any suggests i would be grateful.
many thanks alex

Firstly welcome to the site :D

You could try welding it over but the heat is likely to distort the roof.  I have seen a few times folk who have cut off and replaced the whole roof to remove a sunroof.
How bad is the rust? do you have any pics at all?  Dont make it a rag top, a tin top doesn't have anywhere near enough body rigidity to cope without a roof unless you weld in a lot of extra reinforement, would be simpler to buy a convertable in the first place.

Just to clarify the original factory steel sunroof fitted by VW was made by Karmann not Webasto. Webasto make aftermarket roofs and never specifically for VW. What is the webasto price you quote for, surely thats to fit a sunroof not replace the roof skin or sort the rust? As EW says it is not unusual for a donor rust free roof skin to fitted, won't cost much more than the Webasto price.

wabasto quote was to take the old sun roof out and fit a new one, including interier cloth etc…..
it seems expensive but apart from the roof the car has been fully restored with no rust etc and only 90.000 on the clock. so the qusetion is is it worth spending 850 pounds on the roof to have a complete restored golf which only coct me 600 pounds in the first place and lots of love and attention…..

i will take some photos later this weekend and see what people think?
many thanks alex

Where has the sunroof rusted?  Is it a metal sunroof?  if this is the case then it isn't a webasto one 'coz webasto roofs are full length cloth ones.

If it's the standard metal sunroof that came with the car I've got a spare one…

Ok, but you know for sure it's an aftermarket webasto steel roof that you currently now and need to replace :dontknow: . I know they sell them now, but I never seen one in mk1?

They make a number of different sunroofs - see here - including this steel sunroof…

If the sunroof panel is just rusty, should be easy to replace with a good 2nd hand one whether VAG or Webasto definetly wouldnt pay ?900. As a guide genuine rot free VAG steel sunroof panels and mechanism can be found for ?25-30 at a scrappy.

did you get this car from a lad called tom?,  lhasa green?

if its the car im thinking of its had a sort of aftermarket metal roof panel bolted to the roof of the car incorporating a sort of sliding sunroof like the mk1 should have. its this metal roof panel thats rotten

such a shame as the shell must have been a sunroofless one to start with.

personally think you should try to source a solid roof for it as it will always be worth more than a webasto mk1.

was a bit tempted with this myself but with the mk1 project i have now i dont have the space.     best of luck.   karl.
