Tyres?Tracking/Smoking
Hi All
Just got back from the local tyre/tracking garage…..
I had the camber/tracking done and new rubber on each corner……they were doing a deal….4 for 3. Ended up buying Dunlop Sport 01….On the way home went round a few corners……….it handles fantastic…sticks to the road like glue……(not too much on new tyres tho)
On the smoking front….the mech that did the jobs for me was an old owner of 7 GTI's three of them Campaigns….told him about my smoking problem….he said that if the seals had been gone for a while it could have a build-up of oil in the exhaust system??? Wot do you think??

Hi Tomo
its a long story…but…I had the head refurbished a little while ago, had all the seals done, new valves…..new everything. Soaked rocker cover in petrol for a couple of days to clear out filter……engine sounds really good….goes like the clappers. but a couple of weeks after, it started smoking on start up again….bluey/greyish smoke…it is using a little oil not too much….on earlier posts it seems everyone says it looks as tho it cud be seals again!!!

unlucky that is mate, if its using oil but not dripping from bottom of car and not going into water (headgasket) then could well be valve seals, take it back to whoever did it for you mate and tell em whats going wrong, perhaps they might have another look for nothing especially if you paid them good money,
good luck,
paul

Just double checking, cos I'm sure you did - but once you'd soaked the rocked cover in petrol I take it you cleaned all the petrol out again?
Only reason I ask is fuel in the oil contaminates it very quickly, and ruins the oil's lubricating quality - this would cause major wear very quickly to all the wearing surfaces of the engine…
I'm sure you were on the case though

Another check for worn valve stem seals is smoke on the over-run . Works best when on the move , get the car warm then in second or third accelerate quickly upto say 5000 rpm (no need to go nuts and kill it) then take yor foot off the pedal and watch for smoke in the rear view mirror. Another thought , did you clean out the pipe that leads to the rocker cover as this can get full of gunk . It also goes soft and then collapses when its old, this strangles the engines breathers and can force oil out of the weridest places . Other than the advice Mcscrew posted can't think of anything else except Piston rings and lets hope its not them . Sorry dident mean to be negative. :tlc:
