Tailgate leeks water....

everytime i open the boot on my campaign rain water floods out of the bottom of the tailgate.  8O  i can't see any obvious signs of where the water my get in but its flooding the boot compartment.
Has anyone else had this problem and how did you resolve it?

Many thanks

Check the seal around the boot lock, these deteriorate with age and can allow water in, i would check this first before anything else given you say its filling the tailgate

Apparently the seals around the rear lights perish and water can get in this way.

check the rubber tubes at the top of the hatch, the ones for the wires to go into the hatch ..... plus check gromets along the bottom of the hatch , some have a draiage hole to le water escape ..

I just remedied this problem with my mk1, when i opened the boot a torrent of water poured out from inside the bottom of the tailgate.
Turned out all it was was a number of the little plastic grommets that hold the rear "Volkswagen" and "golf gti" badges had deteriorated and fallen inside the tailgate leaving little round holes behind the badges, not all of the grommets had gone so it meant the badges appeared to be tight to the bodywork but just that tiny gap let in alot of water during the rainy season!

It might not be the source of your leak but its a 10 second check to eliminate them!
