sunroof leak

hi y'all,

just bought a mk1 gti today which was taken in part. ex where i work. am planning to give it a good tidy up,is pretty clean. just needs new water pump and a small dent on the passenger door sorting out. the biggest problem is the sunroof is taped up. is this a common problem? am guessing that the seal must have gone at sometime, and the owner is too lazy to sort it.

hope someone out there can give me the advice i need!

is it a factory fitted roof or a aftermarket glass roof ?   factory roof usualy start leaking if drainage tubes in each corner get blocked up. any pics ? which model ?

its a metal sunroof,all looks very factory inside,certain its a tilt and slide sunroof as it has a handle at the front,but cant confirm this. is a 1983 1.8 gti.

Will probably be just a slide roof. Tilt and slide ones weren't standard in golfs. Can get them from audi 80s though. If you can, peel back the headlining and have a good look around the sunroof area from the inside.

And yes, they do thend to leak if not maintained over time…

yeah mine is the same and same car mate, doing same thing.
Hate it its quite serious aswell as others, this soaks my seat when left out, i mean WHOLE thing you cant sit on, i have to sit on a bag. hmm style.
