SPL Chemical Dip

Hi Guys,

Just wondered if anyone had any advice or up to date feedback on using SPL chemical dipping service and electrophoretic coating system?

I am thinking of using them and I want to use both there stripping service and the electrophoretic coating system as well. Has anyone had both done?

What happens after the stripping presumably there is then metal work to be done before the electrophoretic coating system? I am down in Cornwall so I only want to take the shell up there once if possible.

Thanks :D

All the info is on their site, but it'll cost you £750 plus vat to have it dipped and stripped then £2500 plus vat to have it coated.

I'm having mine dipped then i'll do all the welding and panel replacement rust proof it and paint it. The coating part of the process is far too rich for me!

they coat it, and then you have to remoe the coating to repair i believe.

Also, the coating process often doesn't reach all the nooks and crannies, I know a guy who had a beetle done and within 12 months there was rust staining appearing behind the support braces on the bonnet, and from the heater channels.

It's a bit of a gimic really. I would get it acid dipped by all means, but then just get it primed with a good primer and then repair it.

Ok  thanks,

From the info on their site it is around 750 for the strip and 750 for the coat, where did you get 2000 from for the coat?

How long can you leave a shell indoors in the dry in bare metal before it rusts? how quickly do you need to be putting seam sealer and primer on?

Thanks

Just spoke to spl and the cant coat at the moment as the car factory they were using for the coat processed has closed on them and there are no others in the UK that will let spl use their equipment. so stripping only anyway!

The lady on the phone say they use a special anti rust dip but she reckons surface rust by a couple of weeks if not primered.

Doesn't leave much time for repairs - if they are needed, maybe best to make 100% repairs are already done before but that is hard because paint is and under seal is going to cover a lot up  : confused

get it sprayed in zinc 182 primer as it's weld through. that way you can just cut out repairs and weld them in without spending ages stripping paint back.
