Sort this paintwork out? (Photos)

As part of my little spending spree on the car I wish to get the paintwork in a better condition.

These are the things that stick out:








Now I don't know what color that is, all it says on the V5 is "Red", on paints4u.com it says there should be a code for it, where is it? The guide they have isn't very useful at all. I *think* its mars red but when its like ?30 for a 100ml pot I want to get it right!


So after looking at the above photos what should be my course of action?

Proper clean using AutoGlym shampoo then what?

Its not Mars Red, this is solid, not metallic. The paint code will be on the sticker on your tailgate if it's still there or in owners manual.

Sure someone here will soon come up with the info!

go down to your local paint shop and get them to colour match it.

was someone drunk when they were trying to put the key in the boot lock?

how can you miss that much?

as far as what to do, it's a case of removing all traces of rust, rubbing down with wet & dry, zinc priming and painting

if you take your time you should get a half decent finish

Anyone know where a decent paint shop is in the berkshire area, and where this color code should be?

Reading paints (if it's still around) in caversham was very helpful when I went there last

difficult to tell if those chips around the boot lock have gone all the way through the paint to the primer or if the 'chips' are just full of polish/wax

good idea would be to pop along to the Berkshire meet tomorrow  :wink: I could take a better look

For a cheap temp solution, get a touch up paint dab the paint into the chips  wait for the paint to start to dry then wipe a rag with thiners over the top just leaving the paint in the recesses. Flat off with G3 then G10 polishing compound, then wax.

should be better than chips full of white wax residue anyway!

G10 and G3 i buy from a local general parts supplier and I swear buy the stuff!!

White spirit do as a thinner or is that a 100% no no?

G3/10 expensive? Basically just abrasive liquids?

G3 / G10 are about ?8 a tub but if you only get 1 go for the G10 you can do the whole car with this on a buffing wheel. They are just abrasive liquids but the ones paint shops use. Flats paintwork down lovely just keep it wet.

A small tub of thinners should only be about ?2 prob wrth getting a tad

Take your time it may take a few goes to get it spot on

Well there is a deep scratch down to i *think* the metal (I deleted the image off my site but the original is on my dead laptop which is being repaired!)

If I just dab it on will after a few layers "fill" the scratch enough so that it won't show so badly or will filler be required?

There is some paint missing from the bonnet too from where waters dripped on it and sat there Can't get a pic because my SLR softwares on the laptop!!! GRRR!!!

Halfords offer a service for ?60… but Im not so sure lol!

Hard to say without seeing it really, if you fill the deep scratch with paint so it stands proud of the rest of the paint thats when as it starts to go off you can wipe it flat with the thinners. If its dries too much get some really really fine wet and dry, or just g10 till its flat.

Try a bit first to get used to it.

I used to just dab paint on and leave it on my old cars but it pays to spend time flatting it off afterwards.

Well spent hours today getting the code and getting the paint mixed.

Got some back to black too and have to say both have failed!

Paints wrong color, although its only been drying for about 30 mins, will it match after a few hours in the sun?

At least the scratches etc don't show as much now, although they do abit (paint darker than sourroundings!) So bit bummed tbh for ?15 outlay!

What color should Mark 1 Series 2 GL bumpers be? :/ I can't believe they should be a grey color?

Yes, I think all GL bumpers were grey, not black - I know my old GL had grey ones anyway!

yes grey with a chrome trim. keep working with the back to black (hope it's not in a spray can) they will come up looking alot nicer than black bumpers. as for paint not matching you may find you have to mop back the whole car to remove the oxide then wax and polish for it to look the same colour.

red is a pain for going white over the years. a quick bit of work with a mop and compound will get it looking new.

Sorry to hear its not looking right yet. Try G10'ing the whole car (or alternative compound if anyone knows of any?? As Novocaine said really it should bring the rest of the paint up to look like the new stuff

Will you be attending the next Berkshire meet?

Mind bringing some G10 so we can have a quick crack at the scratch/back.

Sorry mate berkshire is a bit far for me, keep persisting flating the paint down, if its not the same colour paint it wont be perfect but it should look better.

Try to get some pics of it now and post them so we can have a look
