Seat trim colour

Hello.

Can you help me with this.

What colour should the seat trim be on a standard Schwartz black 82 Gti? or could they have been any colour that the buyer specified

Thanks

This is a very good question.  I have had a number of conversations with people on this topic.  The later Mk1 GTI (ie. Series 2) had vertically striped seats which faded from a centre colour.  Some people will tell you there are only two colours but acutally I am aware of at least three.

I believe the "petrol" coloured (sort of greenish grey) were only used in Lhases Green cars.

Other cars came with a more "silvery" silver-grey colour with the exception of Mars Red and Diamond White cars which came with Red striped seats.

Now - here is where the confusion came.  I have seen white MK1s with both the silvery coloured and red coloured seats.  Initially I though the red items were wrong but having seem some VAG photographs, it would seem Red seats were fitted in white cars although I am not sure if you could specify silver ones instead.

If this is the case then it might have been possible to choose the colour seats you had on other body colours too - I'm sure someone else can clear this up for you.

Out of interest, what colour are the seats in your car?

The seats are Red. It's not actually my car, it's a potential buy so I'm trying to find out if they are the original seats.

Actually thinking about it I have seen red seats in a black Mk1 and I reckon they suited it.  I honestly coulnd't tell you if they were an option though…

Cheers, No worries, It's just the first time I've seen a black one with Red seats.

In the UK we got what we were given by the importers, and they stuck to a limited standard specification.

Personal imports which there was a lot of back in the 80?s when 200,000 squaddies lived in Germany 8O  could come with much more varied specs. On the continent you could order 5 door GTIs,  Diesel automatics etc and pick and mix trim levels and options until your heart was content. This may explain a number of the discrepancies and also why some GTIs look like Campaigns when they aren?t really :dontknow:

1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Official UK imports cars were black/silver seats - Alpine White, Diamond Silver and Swartz Black, red/orange seats - Mars Red and green/silver (petrol) Lhasa Green, not sure about helios blue? As Early-1800 says personal imports will have Euro spec which means the GTI could be ordered with different coloured seats. My 1600 is Alpine White, but has red seats. V5 states personal import so quite possibly was ordered with them.

However to add further confusion, not all V5s state if imported unofficially (believe some dealers imported cars to keep up with demand) and someone could have swapped the seats.

If the car still has sticker inside rear panel it will have some codes that may give a clue, also might still be a build sheet attached to the underside of the rear seat which would have codes?

Cheers
