rubbing

Hi i have just got some alloys for my golf 1991 gti cabby, they are 15's and are 8'' wide there is about 20mm gap from the springs to tyre so not rubbing their but it is rubbing on the lip were the arch attaches to the body kit. The space from the tyre to lip is about 60mm when i go over a bump the tyre's rub on back arch's, if i push down on the back of the car the suspension is really soft, would a set of coil-overs help, should the suspension be so soft????   :dontknow:

The wheels/tyres are too wide, rubbing is one of the issues you'll get. You could solve that issue but the other technical problems will remain.

If i stiffened up the suspension so the travel was not so far it would not rub on the lip? the rubbing is the only problem i have got, the rims look good so do not want to get rid of them they are deep dish. The tyre size is 195/50/15 would 45's make much difference?

Guess you could try stiffening the suspension dude, but not the recomended solution.

Coilovers could throw open a whole new can of worms.

As the design of the set up differs from stock, you may find that you have issues with the inner of the wheel catching the either the coils or spring platform.

I had this problem when I fitted the zenders to my car. The only solution to this was to run spacers, 16mm at front and 20mm at the rear. This then caused the rear's to catch the rear arch lips.

There is no easy solution to the problem of tyres catching the metal/plastic of the arches.

I have opted to remove some of the metal from the arch by grinding it back. ( Before anyone pipes up about rust and water etc I have done this to a few cars ) Following cutting the metal back the plastic arch needs to be cut to follow the same pattern. It's important you only remove metal where it will catch, as you still need to attach the plastic trim. Once it's all running clearence it all needs treating and sealing to keep out the tin worm.

I think one of the hardest parts of this job was getting the screws and rivets out of the plastic trim on my car. You need to be carful the heads on the screws don't round out! I ended us freeing several if not most of mine with the impact driver ( used carefully )

Guess there aint an easy fix dude, You can't just throw 7-8" wide rims on a car designed to run 5-6" wide rims!

Projekt Frustration :

White 1991 Clipper. Lowered over polished zender rims, Single 40 dellorto on lynx manifold, kent cam, full stainless 'zorst / manifold, powerflex bushed and braced. Not the fastest car, but sounds super nice!

Still going after 12 years… never said it was a quick fix! Time is not my friend.
