Rivage Paint.

Right then guys im on course for my Rivage going in to be painted in January.

Now the original blue has a hint of purple in it when the sun is on it.

My question is…..

Did they also do this blue WITHOUT the hint of purple?

If so then ill get it sprayed in that.

Also does anyone have a paint code if they did?

Cheers.

From what I can remember yours is a 1990? Seen a few posts from you before. I can only say that I have found an american site that lists paint codes relavent to each vehicle year and other interior bits. Most things seem the same as compared to my 1983 cabby gti on this website. Heres the link for the 1990 spec but you can check year by year and the paint codes seem to be the same as euro/british spec. It also gives you an indication of colour but I'm not sure how good this it is. Hopefully this might help but all I could come up with. Sorry if it's a no good.

Would I be right in thinking theres not much difference between 'helios blue' and ' classic blue' on the Rivage?

Yeah thats the 1 mate.

The colour samples look different but when I looked for pics they looked similar (thats if the cars I looked at were different codes)

Hmmmmm maybe I should just get it done exactly the same

TBH I do like the colour of yours but I still prefer white (although much grief keeping clean). Just personal pref I suppose. Those swabs do look alot different and the metalic one does look good.

Its just the hint of purple when the suns on it im not 100% keen on.

But I supose it would look a lot fresher after new paint.

Yeah would look fresher but if your gonna do it might aswell get it the way you want it , shame to spend money and be unhappy with the end result . I take it you want an original vw colour?

I'll try and have a look for you and if I come up with anything i'll post it up. I seem to be quite fortunate as I love alpine white which is L90e.

Heres a link for VW paint codes I found on another web site. Coulnt find classic on this for blue but many blues listed so might be what your looking for in there. Not sure of years on each of these either.

Rivage paint

Hi BigNormRivage

I understand your comment and dilema regarding the Purple tint under certain light conditions - which I agree can look odd on occasions. Mine has received paint over the years and when viewed from some angles in bright sunshine - you can see the different ages and slight variations / mismatches of paint, which for now - I have to live with.

However, having followed your build thread over the months and considering the time and effort you have put in to keeping your Rivage pretty much as VW intended - part of the identity and uniqueness of a the Rivage version of the golf - is that it only came to the UK in two colours - Classic Green or Classic Blue.  The colours are as far as I am aware - unique to the UK Rivage car and a part of the VW Golf MK1 history. - (Yes I am aware the model was called Classicline in the EU and available as black and Bordeaux red also).

My own opinion is that when the Rivage is clean, with the standard polished wheels, the car looks just right as it is and I don't think I would change it at all. There is something about the whole combination that I like and presumably you do too.

My previous cabby was Inca Blue, (sometimes confused with Helios Blue) - both good colours, but in my opinion they don't have the depth of rich colour of Classic Blue.

There is a very similar blue colour used on the Corrado storm - that was called Mystic Blue - quite similar to Classic blue - but it too shares the purple hue under certain light conditions.

To me a Rivage should be Classic Blue or Classic Green - but I also am a very firm believer that we are all different and it wouldn't do if we all liked the same. - I am sure you'll do what you think is right.

That's enough of my ramblings.

All the best

I am a firm believer of not following the crowd and doing what you want to do, however I have to agree with rivage5 on this one!

You have done so much to make the car appear as factory fresh as it can, to change the paint to remove the rivage's purple tint seems somewhat criminal!

At the end of the day, it is your car and you can do what you want, but you will get many opinions, starting a thread like this!

Yeah ypur both right guys.

Ive also been thinking that its going to look completly different once its painted.

As it is now its 20 year old paint so its not as vibrant as it once was.

Original all the way I think.

There are a lot of blues in the VW lineup that have a hint of purple in them, including my Orly Blue Westfalia.  However, I'm quite familiar with Helios Blue (love that color!) and I've never seen it purple; it has much more gray in it.

For future reference: http://www.cabby-info.com/paintcolors.htm .

And I agree, keep it Classic Blue.  8)

Helios blue varies from year to year. Later coluours had the Purple flip added.
My 88 was Late Helios Blue and that flipped in the sunlight.
I even got some made up to refinish the bumpers code LA5Y and that had the purple flip in it too.
