You are in luck as a book has been written on the subject , it's a welded panel .
VW Golf and Jetta Restoration Manual (Haynes Restoration Manuals): Amazon.co.uk: Porter, Lindsay: 9781859604489: Books
This covers all aspects of restoration on MK1 models .
And i see its only just over a tenner to buy now 8O

Hi, i know this is my first post ops: , but i am about to replace the front panel/front of inner wings on my '78 1.1 n. I collected my genuine panel from gpc this morning, so am ready to go
I would be very interested to read how it's done, as i want to do it properly, so that essay won't be wasted.
I will post pics up asap and introduce myself properly
Thanks for your help.

Yup, i'm aware of this. i picked up the required clips to make the grille fit and am also going to remove the towing eye and plate over it. as far as im aware, bar the cut outs under the bumper, these are the only differences?

yup. where did you get the special clips to make the grill fit?
do you have the part numbers?
the towing eye looks fine. wouldnt bother plating over it if i were you. you need it to get towed anyway.
thanks, Andrew

I read a letter in the Golf+ sometime ago about what is needed to fit an early mk1 grille to the later front panel, and made a note of the part numbers, i'll dig them out and post them up. There are 2 grey plastic clips that push into the square holes on the front panel to accept the top screw of the grille ends, and 2 metal inserts for the bottom screws. As far as i'm aware thats all thats needed.

the sqaure piece doesnt seem to fit for me, and the grey circular paltic piece fits, but is nowhere near where it is supposed to be. :?
you could push them in and take a photo for me could you?

i'll get round to it within the next couple of days and post a pic up for you. they grey clips have a certain amount of leeway each side (they fit into a rectangular hole, and i guess you just move them til the holes line up :dontknow: anyway il try them out on my panel and try to fit the grille and see what happens!

Hadrian do both the complete front panel or the lower front panel. If you need he numbers I can dig the book out (can't be bothered looking just now)
It isn't too bad a job to do, I replaced the lower front panel on my first project car, which has now been binned and is lying in the garage donating parts to the new project
