Removing a welded roll cage?

Hey guys,

Im looking at buying my first mk1 gti and one that I have my eye on has a roll cage welded into it. I'm not sure I want a roll cage as it means I have no rear seats.

Question is, how easy will it be to remove it and what damage will removing it cause to the shell?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Tricky/time consuming if you want to preserve the cage for resale later. You'll need a 4" angle grinder. If done sympathetically, it should leave the existing shell fine, although you'll need to neaten up and repaint where its been cut. Also guard against grinding sparks damaging eg glass, interior, other paintwork (use boards of wood or something to absorb it).
