As long as it's just surface rust then it should be a case of sanding or wire brushing the rust away, treating the bare metal if needs be, then priming and repainting. It can be quite hard to match patches of paint though, especially if the surrounding paintwork has faded. It all depends on how good you want the job to look.

What you may find is that as you remove the surface rust you discover holes in the bodywork itself, which would probably involve welding a patch in place to fix properly. It's hard to say without seeing it though.

Do you have any pictures of your rust, or the locations of it?

any blackness left on the metal is still rust, it needs to be all removed, sometimes this leaves the metal very thin, meaning it needs to be cut out really and a new piece put in......

removing rust

rub down with sand paper , then treat remainder with deox gel made by bilthammer labs let it sit for a few days ,brings the metal up very well getting rid of the rust , wash down either treat again or prepare for painting .
