Red GTi grille restoration - new car pics!

Hello all,

2 quick questions…

I have a standard 4-light GTI grille (which i presume is the same on Mk1 tintops and Mk1 cabbys of the correct vintage) with the red surround.

The paint on this red surround has pretty much all gone, making it more like a silvery pink surround. I want to restore it to it's former glory but have no idea of the correct paint colour to use so that it's authentic. Does anyone know?

Secondly, would my best bet be to take the whole grille & side bits off, mask everywhere that won't be red, rub down down sandpaper, spray on primer and then the red paint?

thanks in advance,

wiknerhacker,

You will need:
Red Primer
Mars Red Number 2

If you take your grille off by removing the screws and clips. Then look at the edge where the metal surround meets the grille and you should see a series of metal tabs holding the surround to the grill. If you caefully prise them away the metal surround will fall away from the grille.

This way you dont need to worrie about getting red paint everyware because you've isolated it.

Then simply rub them down and spray them up.

Refit reverse of removal.

Use etch primer or the paint may flake off!

Agreed - you must use etch primer. Did mine 18months ago and still looks the business!
