today sanded down the filler so it was nice and smooth and keeping shape/profile of the trim, then used prep wipes to clean the surface then used halfords filler primer to make sure all the tiny dings were filled left to dry(initialy with help of hair dryer for about 4 hours.
After four hours used grey(finest grade) scotchbrite (from halfords) prep wiped again then sprayed with halfords red primer amazingly not to far off the final colour thats all for now folks:)

If you use the halford Mars Red over the red primer you have already used the match to the original is very very close.

Yep, they do Mars red no 1 & no 2. From memory, its Mars red no 1 you want as less 'orangey!'

Cheers

Sorry Andy - use the No 2 over the red primer for the closest match

Use no1 to match bodywork

There has been a thread on the top coat colour before here:

http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3454&highlight=l31b

I sprayed mine with red primer and Mars Red No1 (L31B) as specified by VW as shown in the pic. The outcome was a match for the OE grille part I have.

Latest instalment well let red primer harden over nite then sanded it back today with some 1200 wet and dry then sprayed them inside and out came out pretty well.
All thats left is to cut back and polish them tommorow and re-fit to grill:)

You can get any colour made up at places like your local Autopaint, though I have seen No1 at my local Halfords too. As Hairy said No2 is more orangey than No1.

I had no idea that those red stripes were actually crimped metal…..I had assumed they were simply painted directly on the plastic grile.

Excellent writeup with excellent results.  Well done.

i know this is a (ongoing) raging debate, but i really do think mars red no2 is the correct colour. The picture of dubboy's series 1 grill looks too deep-a-red, almost maroon.

Just my opinion.    :dontknow:

Regards, Andrew

P.S. Nice job.  :D
