Rear seat install

Right after getting a set of Mk2 front and rear seats advertised as Mk1 seats i today have managed to get hold of a Mk1 rear bench with parcel shelf attached  :)

I trial fitted it but have gaps at the side of the bottom part of the bench.  The backrest clips into the mounting screws perfectly.

Passenger side gap

Driver's side gap

The seats have these brackets

which i assume slide over the protruding screws from the bodywork.  Have i got the wrong seats again  :banghead:

Anyone any ideas?  Here is a picture of the seats.  Was there any difference between the widths of series 1 and 2 rear benches?  Could that explain the gap i have between seat bracket and bodywork mounting point?

However, I considered the 5dr theory before, so pulled a seat from my Campaign out and……er, same thing!

IIRC memory is faded after not having my car for the last 17 years… I owned a 4 door with rear hatch 81 Diesel Rabbit(westy) the rear seat was held in check by a front catch under the front lip of the rear seat bottom and 2 braces one the seat bottoms.

As it was held in place by 2 Braces on the sides, in your one picture the Stud or pivot on the frame of the car with the Cir-Clip cut is where the Brace attached to the frame to hold the seat in place.  The Seats bottom frames had this same pivot on the bottom edge. I think the Braces on the sides had a pivot in the middle and a 90 angle piece that you have to lift when you had the seat at the Extreme fold over to the front to release to return the seats to "normal".

When you lifted the latches on the seat back, you could fold the back of the seat on to the front.  Then in the case of extreme loads (bigger stuff) you could move the front seats up.  This allowed you to lift the seat back and bottom up to free the front catch an fold it against the rear of the front seats.

I only had to remove the clips off the side braces on the seat bottoms to remove the seats from the car.

As I don't see the pivots on your seat bottoms I think you have the wrong seat bottoms for your car, a Jetta had a different seat bottom than my Rabbit IIRC.

IIRC the frame pivots are hidden by the carpet and only the ends stick through.  The Brace pivots on the seat bottoms were hidden when folded by the seat cushion itself, and I usually had to push it back away from the Brace to remove the clip from the brace.

I suspect it is a by the year thing, as I had a 81 Rabbit Diesel LS 4 door with hatch (westy).  I usually got a half a cord of wood in my rear hatch area if I folded the seats to the extreme.

To fold the seats to the extreme I had to remove the rubber holders off the rear hatch. Undo the latches that held the rear seat back to the parcel shelf panels.

Take the parcel shelf off the fixed parcel shelf panels
and fold the seat forward.

Move the front seats forward, then pivot the seat bottom out of the center catch and rock the seat bottom to the front.  I can't remember if I had to remove the Brace to Fully Pivot the Seat to the front, or if the brace was hinged in the middle (which I recall it may have been (fuzzy re-memories) ).

So while your rears may be out of a earlier Golf, than what you have.  As I have seen over the years not all seats are the same…

While I like the sport seats in my Cabby, I preferred the Velour covered straight ones out of my Rabbit.  After 20 years, they still felt good when I cleaned them they were faded a wee bit, but still looked good.

My Rears weren't faded at all, Neither was the parcel shelf as I had placed a Darker tint over the rear hatch and rear doors and corners.  I had either tools or "computer parts" on the rear floorboards "Work car" or for trips, I had Kiddies in the rear, the dark tint kept the sun out of their eyes, and Prying eyes from seeing what was in the rear seat.

Like I said my re-memory is old, but this is what I can recall…..
