Quick couple questions..

I've just been going through a few of the restoration projects, and saw something that relates to me.

I've got a pair of these -

and I was wondering, - what exactly do you do to fit them? ! I know this sounds like a stupid question, but the shell I've got is fairly solid but there is rust in a couple of these places where the plates cover, do you cut most of this way? Anyone got any photo diary pics of successful use - sorry if this doesnt make sense, but I know what I'm on about and if noone else does, I'll take pics to prove what I mean -
seeing as there is heavy rust inbetween the bolts and around the edges, you don't just slap the panel on top..??

Also, I've managed to, I know, sacaralidge, break an back axle bolt taking the axle off - how do I fix this?

well you shouldnt put them on top of rusty metal but some do. you have options could remove whole thing and replace it all , or just cut out the rusty parts and replace them. thing to remember if rejoining a factory seam spot welds will do, if cutting  and joining where no seam existed then will need a continuous weld. make sense?

If there's a little bit of bolt still sticking up you can try welding a nut on or you can get stud removers specially for the job, just as long as there's enough poking out to get hold of.

You can also drill down the middle of the hole to remove the majority of the bolt and screw in a thread tap that's slightly smaller than the bolt thread to remove the remainder.

Whatever happens it'll probably be a mare of a job, just to warn you.

Thank you - there is quite a bit of it left - so it's a stud? You can buy new ones? Cheers

Assuming were talking about the two threads either side where the rear beam bolts on. i have removed a few nuts  over the years and if they are studs then im very surprised.

i usually centre punch the stud and drill it out and if you lift the rear seat inside there is a piece of duct tape covering a slot in the metal, behind this duct tape you can see the hole you have drilled and i grease a 17mm bolt head and stick it to the socket wi the grease and lower into the hole i have drilled via the slot which the duct tape was covering and leave socket attached and tighten from below. i am not joking about duct tape but i dont think pre 82 has the slot i think its just the wax oiled shells that have it but i aint 100% sure on that, i did my axle mounts on my white one as shown in link below.cheers

Well it kind of is once the hexagon head has snapped, but originally will be a bolt.

Thinking of something along the lines of this that'll grab the bit of bolt sticking up and twist it out.
