Prep Work and surface rust!

I recently started to strip the interior of my mk1, I have stripped most of it back to bare metal ready for respray with primer then matt black. I'm doing the outside after the inside is complete. Surface rust has ermerged already on the bare metal? What should I do, I need to get the primer down asap? I'm also confused what primer I should use, etching primer, or the standard primer.  :dontknow: Cheers James

Moisture in the air will cause the bare metal to rust almost straight away. Rub the surface rust back and get some primer down on it asap. If it is somewhere you won't be doing any welding then standard primer should be ok (someone correct me if I'm wrong here) or else some etchweld primer (http://www.bilthamber.com/ do some good stuff) should do the trick.

Cheers for that, I've got the primer, thinner and etch primer on the way which I'll spray with an air compressor, then its matt black and then cream interior all the way!

Make sure you degrease and clean the area well before priming too...

All the paints on the way should take a couple of days, anything I should do to the rust before then? I've learnt a valuable lesson, make sure you have everything before you start lol!

before you prime you could brush on some rust converter to be safe. When you sand rust, it goes but always a chance (however small) IMO that tiny amounts could remane in minute dimples/pits in the steel. Wont take long for them to develop.

Keep us posted how you get on, sounds a good project!

Its a 1.3 driver, fitted with FK coilovers, its in really solid nick already, I don't cut corners though, its going matt black, or bear metal rat look, with cream interior, clash of rat & rich, looking for some mattig, sportstahls, ats classics or steelies, must be 13" and v wide, maybe roll arches and slam car to the max. Tidy up original engine, keep whole car simple rat/euro. Then once I've finished Im starting a caddy, its a hard habit to break but I love it lol!

Another thing, once the rust converter is on, should I sand again to make a key for the etch primer? Then I need to spray normal primer after that
