Poorly fitting cabrio roof

Bought cabrio gti and have been doing stuff so not put roof up for some months. On putting up, it seems to be about 1 cm short of front roof seal and the locator parts will not drop into housings -even too far away to adjust the metal grab hooks to pull it in. Has it been fitted incorrectly, or is there a way of moving the assembly forward this extra bit without taking it off again?

Also had new windscreen fitted but it broke/cracked the chrome trim insert. Can this be sourced still?
Cheers

Sorry, but are you saying you've never put the roof up since owning the car?

  double check the rear windows arent wound up too far, sounds odd but it stops the roof sitting down into position at the front if they are past their limit

Poorly fitting roof

Roof was closed tight when I got car. Open and closed it a couple of times when had some decent weather last year and then have been doing work on car. Undid back cable to do some body work, mechanical stuff and painting. All this took a while cos weather been crap in Scotland. When I tried to close roof again with cable still loose at back and roof not fastened in on back lip - no joy. Checked back windows today and they seem in line -not too high. Any more thoughts?
Cheers

As you've been undoing cables I would suggest doing a search for the roof fitting guide on here. It's very detailed and has loads of images. The answer should be in there, print it out and have a good read.
