Snap !! Had this problem about 5 weeks ago, main high street in the evening....What an embarassment....Got it sorted now and as was mentioned,VW still sell the part.Thought it was going to take ages but done in 5 mins, the hardest part was twising yourself round so you can access the pedal.....Oh,and take some soap liquid with you as it makes it easier to get it into the aperture..... 8)

This happened to me a few weeks back in the Sportline, now replaced with a new genuine bush, came in at just under ?5, so got a spare aswell.
Top tip if this happens to you is to remove a carpet locating clip (up under the dash area) and push it over the end of the accelerator cable to get you home.

When mine went I managed to bodge together cable-ties to secure the pedal. It was such a good repair that I ran that for a while before bothering getting the part replaced.
FYI, the part number at VW is 431721559 - says it's a bush and it cost me ?5.59 - ?4.86 plus VAT.
The replacement is rubber rather than cork and as someone said earlier, the most difficult part is getting down there and seeing what you are doing.
