Does anyone know where all the original spec's of the various model golfs are listed. i mean the geeky stuff, like gear ratio's not just cc and bhp.

Hi j1mg

There is a fella on this site called 'The Oracle' (Rajan), He knows everything! He might be up at the 'Farm' looking after his 'fleet' today, I bet he can help you.

Try getting hold of the original brochure for your car off ebay as it has a lot of info.

Else if there is anything specific I can look it up for you.

well… basically what happened was the engine in my 1983 1100 had a shot piston ring, then the head-gasket went, so i replaced it with a 1983 1300, when we were removing it, the owner said the gearbox was a 4 speed sport gear-box as opposed to the standard 4 speed that i was currently sporting. i  was really wondering what my bhp gain had been and what was different about the gearbox.

1093 cc has 50 PS
1272 cc has 60 PS

If it is a 4-speed GTi box, 4th gear is 0.969 compared to 0.703 of the standard one. You need the gearbox codes to confirm this.

On the 1100 engine the diff ratio is a bit busier so with a 1.3 'boz on the car will have a higher top speed but a longer 0-60 time and with the 1100 'boz it will not make the same top speed but will get to 60 quicker.  Saying that - you are only talking fractions of a second…

I've just spent the weekend changing the 'box on my 1300 for an 1100 item (the 1300 'box was knackered) and I wouldn't recommend it unless you absolutely have to - the bolts that hold the shafts to the output flanges are a swine!  The gearlinkage is a pain to setup (unless you have an assistant - which I didn't) and the starter motor bolts are different lengths as on teh 1300 the "long" bolt goes through the diff casing and the gearbox too whereas on the 1100 it just goes through the diff casing…

Saying that - I may drive the car and find it totally transformed - but I doubt it!

sounds a bit like my saturday, drove to hemel to remove the 1300 & gearbox(thanks for your help 3piece), drove back to sutton, removed my 1100 and gearbox, then put the 1300 in, didn't think that was bad for a days work. took 4 1/2 hr to remove the 1300, then we got my 1100 out in 2, but it was the first time either of us had worked on a golf. shame my mate and i had to spend 4hr driving really, but when we first turned the 1300 over in my car, couldn't help smiling.
couple of teething problems, but nothing major, got me to work this morning anyway.
