Notchy steering rack help?

Hi all, just done a deal on my first ever mk1
been in to dubs for a few years. I'm looking for bit of help I'm sure some of you will be more than capable of pointing me in the right direction. It's a 1983 mk1 golf gti the steering rack feels a bit notchy what's your thoughts on a fix? Is it a new rack or is it just bushes or a service of the rack?

Best idea is to get it jacked up and check from the track rods in, it could really be anything and its not worthwhile guessing.
