Basically need to chop out the old sill, which involves cutting panels with angle grinder or the like and drilling out spot welds along the bottom of the inner sill. The new panel can then be offered up, positioned, welded into place, then the weld ground back and paint applied.

This is the theory, but in practice you will need to decide how much of the sill to replace and where to make your cuts. Then you may find other areas of rot on the inner sill that will require patching. You may also need to trim the repair panel to get a good fit.

If you are loooking into doing this or any other reapirs to your golf stongly recommend getting this book first. Very good detail of restoration of Mk1 including most major panel repairs/replacement and equipment advice etc.

the only thing about putting a new sill on is that you HAVE to make sure you've got it in the right place when you weld it on, if it's too high the door won't shut, too low and the door won't seal and will let water in.

a tip (if you DON'T have the door on for whatever reason) is to take measurements from the front and back of the door gap, then when you offer up the new panel, you'll know it's at the right height

also when cutting the old metal out, make sure you don't cut too much out as it's easier to cut more off than having to weld more metal in (if that makes sense)
