New member seeking restoration advice

First off hello! I just joined today.

I have been umming and ahhing about what car to buy next and just had (what i hope is) a brain wave - restore my old Mk 1 gti as of all the cars ive owned over the years this has always been my favourite. None of the modern cars I could afford to buy excite me in the least. The idea of having a nicely sorted mk1 gti would just be ace.

However the car has been stood for a number of years in my parents field so would need to be totally restored I suspect from the ground up, inc new engine etc etc and probably gearbox too as it was on the way out.

Anyway, I would need someone to do the restoration for me as I have no facilities / expertise to do this myself.

So Im looking for some advice as to where potentially to take it, what engine options make sense (does the 16v engine from the mk2 car drop in eaily and if so is it a good idea etc) and any 'Do's' and 'donts' etc etc.

Basically any / all advice would be gratefully received.

sorry for the long winded message!

Dave

How do?

I can't help you much with engines but body work, interior and the mechancals are all do-able with a manual and some patience.

Try pricing new/2nd hand parts rather than spend hours restoring  existing parts, saves money and effort that you'll need for troublesome parts.

You're in the right place for advice. There's a forum on just about everything.

In my opinion the 9a engine is the best for a mk1, 2,0 16v fron the coraddo or audi 80.

when it comes to restoration its really all about how far you wanna take it. U can go ott and resto every last nut and bolt ect or simply a few repairs\new pannels and a lick of paint. Have a look at my resto thread for ideas, ive done the OTT thing

Where in the world are you???
