My Series 1 has glass sunroof - what should it be?

Had sold my GTI this Saturday and taken deposit but a conversation with a guy wanting to buy it lead me to change my mind.  Just posted the chaps deposit back to him plus fuel money and i now feel much better!  So, i'm gonna do it again.  The project is back on (never got started in over a year of having it).  The question i got asked most about it whilst it was for sale was about the sunroof.

"is it glass?"

I never knew the sunroof was aftermarket and what i now want to do is put it back to what it should be.

Was a sunroof ever an option on Series 1's?

What do you think i should do about it?

Any links to pictures of how it should be would be appreciated.

Hi, I used to have a 1977 series I Golf I bought secondhand 1978, my avatar shows my car from 78-80 when stationed in Germany.

When I returned to UK, I had a glass sunroof fitted between 80-82.

This was fitted by a Volkswagen garage in Totton, Southampton, while I waited, it was a VW promotion at the time.

I believe though, only metal sunroofs were available when you purchased the car from new and were fitted at the factory.

I don't think a glass sunroof was ever a factory option.  Glass sunroofs were dealer fit or other after market fit.  

I would leave it as it is, unless you are already doing a full on resto and want to replace the roof and roof lining.  A Paris Beetles style sunroof is also an option if it has leaks/rot.

My S1 has a dealer fit glass runroof, it's a period accessory and it doesn't leak so I'm keeping it.

i wondered about the head lining as, from memory, there doesn't seem to be anywhere for the winder.
if i can find the kit to change it back i will, but like you sid it does look period so no disaster otherwise.

Mine has a glass sunroof as well mate, its an S1 GTi on a V-plate
