My Oak Green Mk2 Resto...

Hey all,

You may have seen that I recently bought a 1991 Mk2 GTi 16v 5 door in Oak Green. I never though i'd be able to find a good one but this was it! As can be seen in my other posts i'm in the middle of a Lhasa Green Mk1 Gti resto but I saw this one and had to have it, so here is my restoration post for my new valver..

I bought it three weeks ago and it was by no means perfect. The key stuff such as low miles, Full service history, no damage, all original, etc was all in place, the only problems seemed to be cosmetic. There was a cracked wing mirror and some interior trim that needed renewing or re-affixing (Gear lever boot was ripped, grab handle come adrift). I also found a hole in one of the front driving lamps. I was also drawn to this car because of how immaculate the interior is; there is no wear anywhere!

The bonnet had serious rust at the front end and the drivers side rear door was eaten away at the bottom due to a faulty seal keeping the water in (below)

The front drivers door had also started to get a few patches on its surface and although not noticeable really needed sorting. I had budgeted on getting two new doors and a bonnet as well as a re-spray for the boot and rear panel, but I was crusing google and found a bloke who was breaking a 5 door valver that had had an impact on the passenger side, and guess what?! The car was Oak Green! Result! I managed to get both drivers side doors, a bonnet (I fitted it when I picked the other parts up), a good wing mirror and an Oak Green petrol flap (mine was scratched) for about a tenth of what it would have cost to get all the bits painted! Here are the two front doors ready to get fitted.

Here id the old door getting stripped of its glass and other ancillaries

And here are some shots of the front-side view and side showing the car with its new bonnet and rear door fitted (okay, I'll admit it does need a wash!)

The car has needed a couple of little things doing, namely a spring for the bonnet locking mechanism and the fitting of the new gear lever boot (another bargain find!) but apart from that nothing has gone wrong in the 1000 miles I have driven it in the past three weeks. The MFA works great and is telling me that i'm avergeing about 28mpg in normal driving, not great but this will improve as I do more long trips.

Next on the list is the fitting of the new drivers door, followed shortly after by a new indicator switch (mine doesn't re-set properly). I'm also going to get the boot and rear panel painted and maybe the passenger side at the same time too. I'm looking for a used front driving lamp (fitting a brand new one will make the existing one look shabby!) and a new gearknob as the existing one's badge has fallen out.

I'll keep you updated with its progress. Its MOT time soon but I don't think i'll have it done as the car has to be put into storage at the end of the month until I find a new house with a garage . God I hope I don't have to sell it, i'm loving this one as much, if not more than my Mk1!

Here it is with its older brother, they are a right pair both of 'em

Any comments welcome!

Hey all,

Did a couple more jobs on the valver today (any excuse to avoid doing revision!)

Firstly I wasoiled the doors, bonnet and tailgate; the car has rusted in some areas previously so I didn't want this to happen again.

While I had the passenger front door card off I also swapped my cracked wing mirror for the good used one I got from the man breaking the Oak Green car near Bedford, Jamie.

Old mirror

New used one

Its all in the details!

I also fitted the Oak Green petrol flap I got and reprogrammed the second immoboliser fob so that I now have two sets of keys that work!

Next up is getting a new rear door handle as my current one sticks and also keep any eye out for a good tailgate as my one is a bit rustier than i'd like.

Any comments more than welcome!
