Mk1 restoration help"!"

Hiya all, im after some advise as what to do with my mk1 shell, when i brought the car i checked for all the normal rust areas but now i have the shell fully stripped im wondering if it going to be worth mild restoring as its going to need loads of welding  :( of panels and floor its just really the rear which i the bad area.

I thinkin its going to need the following

2 x outer rear arches
2 x full complete inner rear arches
1 x lower valance
2 x sills

and a whole lot of time on it the only bloody thing is that welding isnt up to doing the job

Here is some pics

so from this

to this

Now for the bad parts

Do you think it to far gone to reapir ??

any comment welcome

Cheers Nick.

It is repairable, and plenty of people have saved stuff that is as far gone as that - the question is whether you've got the time to restore it, or the money to have it restored for you.

What is the condition of the front inner arches like? Given the state of the rears, they may be badly corroded too. If they are, and you've no particular attachment to that shell, I would look for a replacement in better condition.

That said, there are plenty of pattern panels (of varying qualities and prices) available if you fancy repairing it.

I think it's worth saving if you have the time

When you look at the car as a whole it probably gets disheartening, but tackle each area at a time and before you know it you'll have broken it's back and there will be light at the end of the tunnel

I am going to learn how to weld properly as I think you can't beat the feeling of doing something yourself   :D

That guy on vwvortex knows his onions! Good find ;)

Nick - have a poke about under the underseal on the inner arches to see what the metal is like - from the pics they're not as bad as I thought they would be.

Have a read of markwon's resto thread as this has loads of bodywork in it too…

That shell looks bloody good for the year . Repair it , you will struggle to find better . Look at any other makers vehicle from the same age bracket , your Golf has minor rust

The problem is, that once you have finished restoring the car it starts to rust again.

I don't think thats the way to look at it

When the cars were new, no-one was aware of where they were going to rust, but now we all know where they go and there are some very good rust treatments and waxes available these days

A restored, properly rust-proofed car should last a good while before any more work is needed

They're VW, not Alfa  :D

Hiya all, im still having problems with this shell and im really thinking about just scraping it.

Just wanting some help or should i say someone to change ma mind, i started to take off the waxoil and underseal and ive ended up with this now is the car in to much of a bad state to repair ie wasting money when i could buy a more soild shell.

Here is some pictures of the front inner wing that has put BIG doubts in my mind as to what to do

Passengers side inner wig where it meets the door frame.

Drivers side is not too bad really

Opinions are very welcome on this one

keep it up Mate!

I'd say you have done too much already to scrap it! Better the devil you know. At least you now know all the bad areas on this one, if you were looking at replacing it with another you could find alot worse.

You have a great set up there, at least your not out in the road doing it! Great images as well, really help full as i know i will be under taking the same job on my Campaine some day.

Doing a bit of welding on my Driver at the moment on the rear, access is the worst bit but you seem to have that sorted.

You seem to have it sorted by making the repaire look worse before you repair it and removing all the rot before patching or replacing. Feels like you are chasing your tail at times i'm sure but keep it up Mate. before you know it youll be showing it off with pride at all your hard work.

Go for it mate.  The jig that you have the car on will make the job a whole lot easier, and as for welding, a couple of lessons with a mig and away you go. You've got plenty to learn on.
Its a pity that my project wasnt further on, as i have two good front inner wings on my donor car that im eventually going to chop into lots of spare bits.
Good luck and keep us posted.

First Golf, lots of work. I've started so I'll finish!
